Question Qjet Throttle Return Spring

What throttle return springs are you guys using for your 4BBL Quadrajets?

I have read where you don't want to heavy of a spring. Some use one spring, some double up. Some springs are color coded. Any advice?

I think the repro parts places sell you the same spring that's used to hold on the OAI plastic flapper top.....it's typically painted white. It seems to have the right tension/thickness/etc when compared to old original QJet throttle return springs I have found.

I didn't realize I had the wrong spring connected to my quadrajet until an Olds mechanic noticed. It was installed by the prior owner.

So, I found a correct spring at The Parts Place for under $10. They shipped it immediately. Wish I had a picture to share but I'm away right now.

It also depends on how large your foot is and how many hours do you intend to drive in one day...

Some use heavier springs for a feeling of safety (to avoid any toyota-type "sticking" issues)...
However, that can increase wear on the carb bushings and linkages.
Doubling up lighter weight springs is not a bad idea, so that the combined pull is about equal to the stock single spring.

I can't tell from the picture. What kind of bracket is that? I am assuming you are having the spring pull the throttle linkage back from the front of the carb vs. the rear of the carb (if that makes any sense). From what I have read pulling from the front (better geometry) puts less wear on the shaft.

Oh, I just picked up a "GM" spring from NAPA. It seems to do the trick. Not to heavy where it wants to slam shut and not too light either.

Thanks

I'm running the parts store universal bracket and springs on mine. Its a 73 Quadrajet with a mid 80's Quadrajet throttle arm welded on. works great.

I think I was driving my 72 CS around for a year with the spring off completely , was wondering why the gas pedal was so easy.lol...the bracket it normally hooked to broke , so i had to attach one end of the spring to a clip on the alternator bracket
