Project Cheap A$$ DX

Well with most of my stuff sold or pending sale I’ve decided to make an affordable DX build! Project Cheap A$$ DX is now underway and it’s looking pretty cheap so far!

Cheap builds usually cost twice as much as a quality build.

Lol very Valid points above but rest assured it’s a quality build and I won’t sacrifice quality here! As of right now I have a DX Block for $250, 425 crank for $150, Used Manley 6.0” forged SBC rods for $225 and a set of Diamond Forged SBF 4.200” pistons with dyno time only for $217.

Don’t assume that block can go to 4.200. Have it sonic checked first. Not all DX’s are the same.

I know a guy selling a 366 dx engine that ran 9"s on nitrous. The price was less then what the head work was and all it needed was a freshen up.

Its all fun and games until you have to pay the machining bill lol. My short block ran me 1500 alone just machining then the intake with the cost of the intake ran me 700 for modifications and port work. I traded labor for the cylinder head porting. Easily over 2500 there.

I’m not really worried about machine work. I’m working with a shop that’s been very reasonable!

That piston doesn’t look like it’ll give you a boost friendly compression ratio. What are you shooting for?

Mark this is going to be a N/A with maybe a 100/150 shot of Nitrous. No boost. I’m looking for 650hp

Gotcha, I was thinking boost of some sort for some reason. Sorry.

I'm not sure those piston will work good on the street. They have been gas ported.

Yeah I ended up not going with those pistons. The price was amazing but after taking a closer look they wouldn’t work.

You can have it cheap and good.
You can have it cheap and quick
You can have it good and quick.

You can't have it cheap, good and quick.

There have been a few threads belittling people doing a less than unlimited budget repair or build. I say; your engine, your budget, you know the risks, do as you see fit.

Roger.

Oh absolutely! I’m not building an all out race engine but 650+ hp should be easily attainable with my build. I have some nice used parts at dirt cheap prices so far but there are definitely things I won’t skimp on. A buddy named the build cheap a$$ so I’m sticking with it.

I am in for this build!

What pistons?

What heads and cam? Flow numbers?

Intake?

It is funny, all of the used parts you have there are of a higher quality than 90% of the builds that most Oldsmofolks put together.... I am not worried for you!

Heads will be an NOS set of Iron stage 1 Battens and the Intake is an NOS Edelbrock Batten Victor manifold. Pistons are looking like they will be new from DSS unless I can find some nice used 4.185” .927 pin forged pistons somewhere.

Flow numbers on the heads should be somewhere in the 330+ range.

I just sent my DX out to be pressure tested but I just scored a complete D block diesel for $50 bucks and I’m thinking I’ll get that one tested as well. The D Block should save me money in machining costs.

Well here’s an update! Due to unforeseen opportunities presented to me, project Cheap A$$ has moved to project lose my A$$! My race engine is now going to be my street engine and this 440 Diesel build has transformed into my race build! Just so you all know I had no plans to go full race with this build but I’ve acquired some healthy race parts and it would be a shame to let them sit and do nothing! Let the fun begin!

Funny how that happens, right?
I'm starting down the D block path myself. Not sure where it's going to end up.

Yeah my 650hp D Block turned into an 800+hp build! Apparently I’m on more drugs than I thought or I need better ones!
