Playing the pump and pulley game...

My 64 330 [with the odd-ball outlet] water pump is starting to hammer. I was shocked to see the replacement was 100 bucks. I've also searched and found the 64 to be a fluke item, hence the outrageous price. In the very near future, I plan on swapping in a 455 or a 350 Olds engine and I realise I'm going to have to switch over to a passenger side outlet pump anyway. I've called my friend at the radiator shop and he said he can swap the connection on the tank for the lower hose to the other side for 30 to 50 bucks. My idea is to swap over to a 65 pass side style pump... [outlet size choices are 1.75' and 2" ... got to measure what I have..] and have the tank swapped out to match. The big question is the pulleys... [non AC car] will the 330 pulleys and water pump swap over to the 350 or 455? I'm kinda worried if the weird 330 balancer will give me alignment problems, as it looks nothing like the newer engine balancers. I've read keeping all the pulleys and water pump together will work on any of the motors, but I'd like some advice from the local experts here to be sure.

The pulleys will work so long as the new pump is the same length as your 64 pump. You should be able to take it to a parts store and match it up so long as you can find a guy that doesn't have H.I.A.D. (head in *** disease) and can find you a few to match up. If you were close to me I'd hook you up, but alas you're on the other side of the country.

Hi svnt442, thanks for the reply! I found out today there may be a 455 in my near future. A friend came thru and hooked me up on a mostly complete motor, for a great price... The new question arises though... Am I going to need to run the short 69 350 cutlass pump on the 455, as the fan is already VERY close to the radiator. I'm also going to need to get the outlet switched over on the tank anyway... I guess then the 65, 66 and 67 radiators are already on the correct side for my swap... Will I need a special lower hose or do I need to grab one of those crappy "crinkle" hoses? How close would a hose be from a 65 Chevelle with a 283? The outlets are both in the similar positions. Any ideas? Cheers, Mike

Just make sure the water pump you buy is of the same length as the '64 pump is. Then use the 330 pulleys. On my daily driver I put a 350 Olds in it and just had the rad shop move the lower neck to the other side. Use the '65 and up lower hose and you are good the go. If your 330 has single exhaust you will have trouble with the cross over pipe. Best just have dual exhaust sys with 2 1/2 all the way back. I use the Dyno-max muffler and tail pipes over the rear axle. Nice tone.
This is it before I put the engine in.

Hi Gene,
Thanks for the tip. I'm going to go put some bucks down on the 455 today and take a closer look at the front set up. I think it already has a water pump on it, but I'm sure it's too long. Looks like I'm going to use a 69 350 water pump, as it's the right length and use the 65 up hose, as you mentioned. Nice looking car you have! Wish mine had two less doors! Cheers, Mike

If you keep the 64 set up, try Superior pump service, here in Phoenix. They also stock the short, and long pumps (short pumps are unavailable out here, cause all local cars have A/C on them). They will UPS wherever you want it.

I like the idea of going to the 65 set-up, I also went to the 68-later power steering pump. I had to clearance the lower bracket just a bit, to clear the steering box.

A 4 door 64/65 looks FAR better than any 4 door made afterwards.
That is the best looking quadraport car GM ever made, IMO.
Just take a peek at any 68-72 4 door. You should feel better.

The 66-7 water pump is the same length, 5.12" from gasket surface to pulley mounting surface, but with the passenger side inlet. Your driver side inlet is to work with your style radiator. You can use the 64 pump on any 330-350-400-455 etc. Get a good replacement pump, don't store it dry (such as winter coolant draining of the engine) after putting coolant through it, and it will last a long time. Your 64 also has the timing tab and the kerf on the damper on the other side from later engines. you would have to mark the damper and use the later timing tab (1966-7). You could do that with the pump off by going to TDC on the 1964 mark and tab, install the later tab on the other side, and make another mark on the damper where it meets the TDC mark on the later tab.
