oil galley plug wrong ?
left rear oil galley has a solid plug in it..... the book says it's to have a .040 hole in it to lub the oil pump shaft and dist gear. In another section of the book (lub diagram) says the oli pump and dist shaft is splash lub'd and that the .040 hole is purging any contaminates. So ....did the machine shop put the wrong plug in ? Maybe to keep oil pressure up ?? The machine shop guy builds race engines, so he must be right ? ....or maybe just in a hurry ?????
I don't think it's supposed to be a solid plug?

It should have a plug with a hole. I have always belived that if you don't have one you will rune the distributor gear. Any way I have a 70 W30 car that I put a different cam in years ago, and when I checked the plug, it did not have a hole in it. Not sure how long it was like this, but the cam and gear looked great when I took it apart. So I'm not sure I has to be, but I would use one. Also I think it does help bleed the air out of the oil system. I know it helps, because when I prime a Olds I get oil in no time. The first BB Chevy I rebuilt, and when I primer the pump, I could not get oil to the top of the motor. I got worried I did something wrong. Finnaly after about 20-30 minutes got oil. Then I read that some guys put a small hole in the front oil plug, just for that reason.

The plug should have a hole in it. Just got done reading Bill Trovato's book on Oldsmobile V-8s and he states the hole should be .020-.030. It's a 3/8 pipe plug and if you don't have the correct one you can use a brass one from the hardware store and drill it.

just talked to ' Mundello' in California, says the oil hole HAS to be there, forgot to ask why.....just thought you all would like to know.................thank you guys!
Not only can gear teeth wear, but the mounting boss in the block can get worn. Be sure to use a plug with the hole. Notice that the opposite galley has a plug in the front with a hole in it to lube the timing chain. Thus both galleys have spit holes.
