Maybe if you told us exactly which bolt or better, provided a picture with the location of the lost bolt, we could provide useful information.

For the pump to leak, there's one bolt up high in the back, there's a double-ended STUD near the bottom in the back that mounts to the rear bracket, and then there's the big *** fitting for the relief valve assembly where the ps pressure hose to the steering gear goes into. If the bolt/stud is missing or loose, it could seep/leak fluid. There are o-rings on the actual pump inside the casing that actually seals the holes when the fitting/bolt/stud is tightened down to proper torque.

No bolt on the front will cause a leak directly by not being there.

Your pump number was GM 7840244.

If you need the stud, here's one on ebay. M10 x 1.5 GM p/n 7831388.

If you're missing the upper bolt, it's GM p/n 7830239, and there's one here on ebay.

Not a great picture here for actual assembly, but gives you an idea of what's going on. That thick washer/spacer (#5) is important, don't lose it. It's tricky because it goes on between the bracket and pump and held by the upper adjusting bolt. So you don't want to just remove the upper adjusting bolt when tightening belts or other maintenance.

If its one of the bolts that holds the reservoir on I dont think it is something you will find at McMaster. If it is the one that 69HO showed (7830239) it is still available from GM. Any dealer should be able to get it for you.

Likely not anymore. It's listed as discontinued per GMSPO. GMpartsgiant may be able to get it because they scrounge up stuff from third party sites sometimes, but be careful. By the time you pay the tax and shipping from them...the ebay bolt may be cheaper. Know all your costs going in to avoid any surprises.

It seems that some of the "rebuilt" units don't come with the bolts and stuff and you have to transfer them over from the old pump. Why that is, I don't know. Unless their parts pictures aren't accurate. There's a lot of plastic plugs showing on the pumps in those areas where the stud and bolt would go. Weird.

Edit: Just checked the total price on that bolt from GMpartsgiant...they're buying it from the ebay ad I posted earlier because there's a $9.95 extra fee tacked on. Bringing the total from GMpartsgiant to $22.57. And I think that's before taxes.

You can find them in the aftermarket, however. Pretty much all the GM repro houses sell bolt kits for the Saginaw pumps.

I don't know what bolts come in those aftermarket kits, but I'm betting they're SAE threads. Whichever way you go, just make sure to know you'll need the metric M10x1.5 bolts for your 83's pump. Not all bolt holes were created equal.

Good point. I keep forgetting about those 1980s cars put together with half-SAE and half-metric bolts. In any case, this is not really difficult. It's not a high-stress application. Any hardware store metric bolt (yeah, you can get them) with the right threads will work. The seal is internal to the pump (between the pump body and the reservoir) so the head really isn't critical. The biggest problem will be finding one short enough, but you can cut down a hardware store bolt.

Here's a list of GM parts for the pump. Shows the bolt at M10x1.5, 13mm long. That's a shorty for sure. Not 100% sure when they moved over to metric, but I suspect it was around 1980, thereabouts.

McMaster Carr has M10x1.5 bolts in both 12mm and 14mm lengths. Of course, you have to buy a pack of 25.

in your image its the "bolt" on the top. completely gone and causing minor power steering leak but then again, it could be from other spots. but i will order the bolt and a replacement pump and make this a weekend project

and thanks everyone for the diagrams and wisdom. havent dabble in olds in over 10 years so using this as a comeback haha
