Motor Mount Issues

I am just about ready to drop my engine in but I have become confused with the motor mounts. I forgot to take picutes of how they were mounted. One of the old mounts had a bracket with studs attached to it which side of the block does it go on? I'm thinking drivers side if it is supposed to be used at all. Also with the opposite side of the engine there are three holes on each side of the block do I use the front two or the rear two? It seems no matter which set I use the mounts don't appear to be parallel, I'm getting confused help

if i remember correctly, the TABS in the middle of the rubber mount are located on top, they serve to help you locate the bolt holes while dropping in the engine.

That mount looks all wrong to me. There isn't supposed to be anything between it and the block so that bracket shouldn't be there. And you should use the rear 2 holes on each sidr of the block.

What did your motor originally come out of? Have these mounts been used in your 1972 previously?

The bracket in the picture APPEARS to be the spacer used on diesel 350 motors. The larger starter on the Olds diesel required the driver's side motor mount to be moved forward to clear. This will NOT work in a 1972 A-body car.

More to the point, are these the motor mounts from the car the motor came out of? If so, throw them away, they will not work with your frame mounts. You need Anchor P/N 2261 mounts to match the original frame mounts in your car.

Thanks guys, I purchased the motor from a guy who told me he pulled it out of the 1972 Cutlass Supreme that was parked in the background underneath the engine hoist. Since the car was there and the motor had been freshly pulled I figured it to be true. Since my purchase I have come to find out that the guy normally rips half of his customers off and I was supposedly one of the lucky ones but now I'm starting to second guess that due to this new info. The motor will not be going into a A body car it is a B body car. The mounts in the picture are P/N 2261. I purchased those a few months back after reading your great article about mounts. So all in all I can ditch the bracket since I won't be needing the additional starter clearance?

For the B body cars I think you use the front 2 holes, but don't quote me on that.

The front two holes are only used on 1964-1970 B/C-body cars and 1973-74 Omegas. Diesels use the bracket in the picture on the driver's side, which bolts to all three holes. 1977-1979 Firebirds with Olds motors, first gen Sevilles with the fuel injected Olds 350, and 1980-1990 Caddy Fleetwoods with the Olds 307 use a metal engine side bracket that also picks up all three bolt holes. Everything else uses the back two.

And I thought B-body cars used a different mount than Cutlass?

BTW, I went on the Napa, Advance Auto and Rock Auto sites last night and they all show the wrong mounts for 70-72 Cutlass 350. It is not the 2261, so be careful when buying mounts at the parts store as their catalogs can be wrong (Joe Padavano has pointed this out before as well).

Thanks, Pete

FWIW the O'reiley site shows the 2261. I put a new set on my 72 Supreme with a 350 last summer and they slid right in to place.

Depends on the year. For example, the 1965-70 cars use 2262/2263 mounts. RH and LH are different. These are the mounts with the threaded stud. On the other hand, 77-90 B-body cars do use the same 2328 mounts as the Cutlass, however.

The Rock Auto catalog won't even give you the motor mount category when you look up parts for a 1970 Delta 88, yet if you do a part number search and type in 2262 or 2263, the parts show up in the system. If you then use the link that shows what they fit, the catalog correctly shows them for the B/C body cars, but also for the 1970 (only) Vista and the Cutlass for 1964-1970.

Then they probably wonder why there's such a high return rate...

Thanks Joe you made me go and check my mounts again. When I went to the parts store a few months back I asked for two mounts P/N 2261. They had one in stock and I had to order the other one and pick it up the next day. The one in stock was an anchor P/N 2261 the one they ordered was a DEA products P/N 2261. I figured they were the same until Joe pointed out to me that the picture had the wrong mount. the DEA products mount is about an 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch bigger Is it really a big block mount? Both have the same dimensions in the frame mount area. I think I might be going back to the parts store. Good catch Joe!
