Which motor do I have...?

Hi guys,

according to the pre-owner my car (72 CS) has a 350cui inside.
Shouldnt it be painted gold ?
Mine is red.
Only numbers I can see from above are as attached.
Anybody an idea or is it just a repainted engine ?

Thanks,

Marc

Re-paint. Post the # atop the timing chain cover below the intake manifold.
We can tell you for sure. Looks to have the correct heads for a 72 I think. Not 100% sure though.

classic spray-can big block conversion.
GOLD paint is hard to find at the auto parts store, so whatever is handy gets used.
7a heads = 1972 350

I have done the opposite
painted a 425 gold to make it appear to be a 350 like the car came with.
Wow, that 350 sure runs great!

As noted, you need to read the block casting number located above the water pump, next to the oil fill tube.

Thanks Gentlemen. Will check if I see something next to the oil filler, I am pretty sure there is nothing...

Anyway, I´ll check the colour of the warp core of USS Enterprise, repaint my Olds engine and will travel by the speed of light !

Well, if you loaded it into a C-130, took off, and drove out the back mid-air, you might, depending on altitude and attitude, get close to the speed of sound before you cratered....

Don't get discouraged. Back in the '80s an engine builder did me a "favor" by painting my 455 a lovely shade of purple. I just shrugged and installed it. Thing ran fine.

Every Oldsmobile block cast from 1964 to 1990 has the block casting number located there. Clean the grease and crud and look again.

Just a suggestion, Why not post up in the newbie section. Introduce your self, it can open up more doors.

Let everyone get acquainted with you and the car and its back story. Don't be afraid to tell us the same stuff. oh..and more photos please. Nice car.

You get more coverage than jumpin into an old zombie thread.

Nice looking car, I love the color. My 2000 Grand Marques is thatcolor green, very pretty. Unfortunately my Grand marquis rotted underneath tothe point of being unusable but nearly all the sheet metal and paint stilllooks beautiful.

Well the Olds 350 you have is just like a Die&Sell engine with lower compression, fuel/air mixed outside the combustion chamber, and a spark system to light the rockets.

If you like, you can get a factory Olds Diesel 350- or the sawed off 260 V6 version- and put one of those in there.

I would not recommend that course, but it CAN be done.

If you were told it was a 455, did the seller write it in the bill of sale or anything anywhere? Paying for a car with 455 and getting a 350 is a bummer.

72 engines, unless warmed over aren't anything special, so It'd be a little upset.

But your car looks very nice. I like it!

No, I didn't, unfortunately! My brother knew the guy WELL, and assured me he could be trusted by his word so I felt there was no need for any of that! Live & Learn I suppose.
I'm 44 now and not that "into" all the extra HP and satisfied with the car even with learning it's a 350. Just a bit disappointed

The 0lds 350 is a long lasting, trouble free motor from that era with acceptable power. The only internal area in those motors that should be changed is the nylon timing gear. Another idea, if it doesn't already have it, is dual exhaust. Great big car by the way.
