The good news;
All 49 thru 64 Olds engines will bolt up to your bellhousing.

The bad news;
57 thru 64 engines require an "offset balanced flywheel" which means your flywheel won't work. Plus, all engines from automatic trans cars will have to have the crank drilled for a pilot bearing by a machine shop, after the crank is removed from the engine.
Considering all this , $1000 for an engine kit is not too bad.

I agree with everything except having to drill the crank but there are many other things that must be changed to make this conversion. I could be wrong on this but as I remember when a friend did a conversion from a 324 to a 394 the crank was already drilled and excepted the slant pan pilot bearing.I don't think the 394 was a stick car they were very rare even back then. Check this link out it list many of the steps that are needed to complete this swap correctly...Tedd......I can't get this link to work but if you use a yahoo search on how to convert a 324 to a 394 engine the first listing pretty much goes through what is needed to swap engines. I wondering if my buddy used a 394 out of a 62 or earlier engine and if there is a difference there?

My 55 Olds is a 3 speed manual factory car, maybe I need to check the block to make sure its a 324? Thought that was all they came with in 55

Most 303's and 324's are already drilled and come equipped with a pilot bearing and retainer. Starting in 1957 with the 371's and 394's just standard cars were equipped with them.

This shows the difference between manual (left) and Jetaway (right). From the 1956 factory manual.
