Help with starter
I have a 1986 442 and a few years back I updated the drive train-350 Olds engine, unk year, (lost the paperwork and the guy that did the swap is no longer in the area) with a 700R4 transmission. The problem I now have is that the starter is bad. I have no idea what starter I have to buy to replace it. Any ideas on how to find out the year of the engine or is there something on the starter to identify it? I can't find the engine number, too many parts in the way. I did find a number on the head, front of the engine-driver's side, it says 3A. Does this mean it is a 1977 - 1980 engine?

You're sure it's a700R4? What adapter was used?
In any case, any Olds starter will bolt to your block. Assuming you have a stock flexplate, any RWD Olds starter will work. I suggest a high-torque version from a big block.
Yes, the 3A is a WMW 77-80 350

Thanks Joe, I am recovering from some major surgery and it is sort of hard for me to get under the car to find numbers. I feel much better now knowing that the starters can be interchanged.
Yes it is a 700R4, I don't know what type of adapter was used but I do know we had to have the driveshaft shortened and the crossmember redone and relocated. This car is my daily driver and I haven't driven it much lately due to the starter being out and my time in the hospital.
