HELP with starter circuit wiring

i took the starter out of my 76 cutlass and the wires were fried, so i replaced the starter and all the wires and hooked the battery back up and the wire from the stater to the firewall burnt up the moment i touched the ground. so if someone could plz send me a diagram or something like that or tell me what i did wrong i would be thankful

I'm not a 76 guy but someone will be along shortly, I'm sure.

FYI The classic definition of Crazy is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So don't do it again.

Hang in there we'll get ya fixed up.

There should be the power wire from the battery to the starter(LARGE). The signal wire to the starter solenoid from ignition switch & usually a second wire from the solenoid that supplies direct power to the coil during cranking.
