Engine rebuild question

Hey guys I am in the process of tearing down my 350 motor because of a knock, I was wonder what all I should get checked or any other advise anyone can give me to help insure all is good when i put it back in. Also if anyone could give me some pointers on things i can do to give the motor a little more kick that would be great. Right now it has the original block and heads and has a Edelbrock performer manifold and carb with air cleaner on it with dual exaust. I think thats all the aftermarket parts. Thanks for the help guys just starting out so anything will help.

350 Build

Check the line bore, rod big ends, small ends, pin bores, check for a cracked piston etc. You'll need to find out why what happened happened.

As far as other mods go, what do you want out of it, what's it going in, gear, vehicle. And finally, how much do you plan on spending.

Good advice. Also, depending on how many miles are on the engine check cam lobes for wear, maybe put in a hotter cam. Check out the heads, are the valve guides worn, what do the seats look like? Do it right and don't cut corners. If you don't have the cash, just wait till you do otherwise it could cost you much more in the long run.

i don't need anything crazy, just want to add some horsepower. I don't want to spend a lot right this min but i amm willing over time to add on as i go and as funds are available. I was thinking about a new cam, I just want something that will beef it up but not bog it down any suggestions? I was told because of the carb and manifold that are on the car that the owner before me put on it that it would be best to get the heads redone to work better with the carb is this true?

Well if you are not going to modify the heads than you will need a cam with less than .500 lift. Comp Cams make a High Energy cam with .456 in of lift and a duration of 268int/268exh for about $200. It's a step up from stock and you can keep the heads stock.

If it were mine.....NOT wanting to be crazy, just adding some power...
Go to 9/9.5:1 compression on the engine build, with some 2" intake valves in the cylinder heads by a shop that knows how to do it right. Non adjustable valvetrain, proper stem heights. Proper bowl transition to seat, maybe a back cut on the valves.
A Comp 268 cam (what rdrockit said) is an OK fun camshaft..., but there are better grinds out there.
Dual exhausts...
Pour heat crossovers.
4 bbl carb, try a q-jet. Electric choke.
3.23/3.42 gear (if no overdrive)

Get a hold of this guy, he's not far from you.
One of the BEST builders of performance Oldsmobile engines. And he's not far from you.
Really, just dump the idea of that 268 cam, Smitty (M&J Perf) can get you 20 more HP with similar specs, similar price.
CALL HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

B-Mann,
Yes that is the cam but you need the kit with the lifters included.

On the Comp Cams website it says you need different vavle springs, is this a must for this cam?

I am not sure on an Olds engine, maybe one of the other guys can shed light. I have use the cam on a Chevy 350 without changing the springs. The specs on the Chevy head were stock springs good up to .500 lift and with the Comp cam it is .456. As Warhead said give Jim a call as he is an expert on Olds engines. Good luck.
