Edelbrock cam....?

Had a suggestion of putting Edelbrocks 2151 Performer for BB Olds in the 350.....any feedback on this? Have the 350 cam in there now, was looking to up the ante a little bit and it was suggested that the Edelbrock 2151 cam would be good because (according to Edelbrock) designed to work well with the Performer/Performer RPM intake.

350 cam specs 280/290 duration .449/.473 lift
204 degrees/214 degrees at .050"
114 degrees LSA / Intake centerline 106 degrees

455 cam specs 288/298 duration .472/.496 lift
214 degrees/224 degrees at .050"
112 degrees LSA / Intake centerline 107 degrees

Any outlook on whether or not this would be a reasonable change or just look at something different. Power brakes...going to a 3.08/3.23 rear and have 1800 stall now (may need to step up)

What year 350 and is it stock? Depends on Cr, it will need mid 9.xx to work well, and you really don't have enough gear and converter. At 9 to 1, I switched from that cam to a 210/216 Engle with 3.08s and picked up .8.

I'm with Jim on this one. You need 9.0:1 or better for that cam and gear. Better yet something on a bit tighter lobe sepand with a bit less stagger would give you better low end as well.

Headers? Intake? More info would be helpful too.

Block is a 1969 with #5 heads rebuilt/machined....with 10.25:1 pistons in it. Trying get feedback on the intake too. Edelbrock of course recommends the Performer.....Ive had a few tell me step up to the Performer RPM. Def. going to change the gears in the rear end and headers for sure. Might be a little behind the curve on valvetrain combo's but I know it's gotta breath a li'l bit. :-) Looking forward to more info....Thanks!!

If you have 6 cc pistons with an after market gasket, Cr is probably 9.6-9.8 to 1, pretty good for a street car. A cam in the 220 @ .050 and .500 lift on a 110 or 108 would be about right. The old 20-22 (226/230) Engle would be good with a little gear.

I see. Another thing that just came to mind....the car does have power brakes. Would I be ok or would a vacuum canister be in order? Ive also heard to not "over carb" the motor.

I'm not small block savvy, but had the 472/496 (2152) cam in my 400 and it was lazy. I think there are better profiles than the ebrock cams. You don't want your car to look like a summit catalog puked on it, do you?

Marketing propaganda. Talk to one of our Olds vendors. They won't sell you one of these cams.

Hahaha....not really! :-) Good to hear first hand about the 2152 cam. Certainly don't want to waste time with something that isn't going to do what I want. I see a lot of guys here lean toward the Engle cams. Seem to not quite have the duration but still making good power.

Engle cams grinds the JM profiles.... Can't go wrong. Nowadays, I'd go custom roller. Forget flat tappet and zddp.
