There are other cheaper kits and/or methods of retaining your lockup function. If for some reason you are dead set against messing with lockup, then you can have your trans built specifically to not use it. This would allow you to run a more efficient non-lockup converter.
To expand on the prior posts, the 200-4R works fine without the lockup function - I've been running the one in my Custom Cruiser that way for a couple of years. You can easily hook up a toggle switch to engage the lockup manually on the highway, but you need to remember to disengage it when you downshift or slow down.
