Continuing 72 350 tuning issues.

Think I solved the slow choke spring issue. I had three slightly different springs. Put all 3 on the bench and lined up the hook end and heated them as consistently as I could and used the one that opened the most. Seems to be OK.

Now I’m having trouble getting the idles set. If I get the fast idle to where it seems reasonable, I cannot get the slow idle down (once the choke blade is fully open) low enough. The car car starts having issues as I try to bring the slow idle under about 1000rpm. Will be idling at 1000rpm then rpms drop and it stalls….

After trying it three times, I glanced over at the distributor and saw the points assembly moving around. Obviously this is screwing with the idle.

I’m not sure where to go from here. New points, rotor cap, I replaced the vacuum advance with the correct one (per rock auto).

I had the door off the ca to dial in the dwell otherwise I wouldn’t have seen this.

Initial timing is set around 10 degrees & I didn’t mess with the distributor weights as the car originally ran OK.

Any thoughts?

Originall Qjet? Rebuilt? I wonder if the throttle shafts are leaking?

Original as in correct number (7042250).

The owner had it professionally rebuilt locally. I guess I need to call the guy and ask some questions.

Frustrating.

When the breaker plate moves, disconnect the vacuum advance to see if the breaker plate stops moving.

Also look to see if the secondary throttle plates are sticking partially open.

Changing the idle speed obviously changes the engine vacuum. This causes the vacuum advance to move the breaker plate. All that means is that those parts are working as they should.

Validate you have a functioning dash pot (which moves freely w/o binding) and it is adjusted correctly - 0.060" clearance between dashpot & throttle lever.

Make all your adjustments with the distributor vacuum line disconnected and plugged. Set the dwell, timing, high and low idle, the air/fuel mix, and then reconnect dist. vacuum. You may need to adjust the low idle again but everything else should be right.
