Question Cast Iron Ring Seating

I have a fresh build 350 Olds, Flat tappet, Stock. Does anyone know the type of oil I should use for the seating process, I know Full synthetic is not good for it. Right now I have 10W-30 Conventional and a STP Engine oil treatment, though I am having second thoughts on that being in it. Thanks, John

Nix the STP for the breakin. I use non-detergent straight 30w, perform the breakin and then change the oil and filter.

Get actual break in oil, high ZDDP and designed for what you are doing.

Did you already perform the 20minute breakin procedure? If yes, then change the oil and filter using Valvoline VR1 10w30. Nothing extra is needed.

I already did the break in procedure and changed off of vr1 because the car still smokes

If the cylinder walls were properly machined the rings should almost be seated on the engine stand. Have you actually driven the car ? Putting a load on the engine will help finish the seating procedure. What rings did you use ?

Also if the carb was rich during break in it will inhibit the process.
Engine needs to be loaded for proper break in.
And zinc is good for ring seal as well as cam longevity.

I haven’t gotten a chance to properly drive the car it’s been driven probably 5 miles and with idle time. I plan on it this weekend as I was waiting on a fuel pump

Hasting rings are usually very quick to seat. Idle time is terrible on a new engine. Dont run it until you can drive it.
