1971. I know it well. Since you didn't say, I'm assuming it's street and occasional strip (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). My recipie:
Improve the breathing-pocket port the heads and open up the air cleaner
Improve heat retention in the intake-have the crossovers in the heads filled and go to a later model electric choke.
Improve compression-1970 pistons are the best
Improve intake-Performer RPM and you can keep the QJet
Improve fuel delivery-have the QJet professionally built (it's cheaper than a new carb and, really, they're great carbs) and a Robb Mc 440 fuel pump
Improve valve movement-roller rockers (not roller tip...ask me how I know) and a good cam (with matched torque converter,of course). I like my Lunati Performer RPM clone cam
Improved ignition-HEI with external coil, MSD 8mm wires and Delco plugs
Improved gearing-I like 3.42s on the street, but I know guys that run 3.73s with no problem
That's my formula...but there's as many opinions as there are drivers.
Or you could just lock and load a 455.
