I saw one of these on a car not that long ago, and it sounded pretty good. Anyone here use one?

I figured it might be a gimmick, otherwise everyone would have them. I need a new filter anyway, and I was considering getting a 14x4 to replace the current 14x3 for just a little more airflow and I found these.

I'm not a huge fan of the washable air cleaners, but the open top filter design had me wondering.

Works very well.they did some testing and although the increase was minimal between a 3 inch tall filter by 14 in. Diameter with a lid . There was gains. The shorter filter and smaller diameters lost alot of performance. I forgot who wrote the article but they did dyno testing. The loss of hp between an open carb vs filter with lid was like 1 hp.

I run a 14" one with a 3.5" tall filter.

 

I do like the sound of it. I ran a late 70's trans am years ago with a 403 and we opened up the shaker and used a filter top air cleaner and it ran way better.

 

Where did you find a 3.5" filter? I found a 4" made by Mota, but not a 3.5".


Interesting. I'm tempted. I'm trying to find the blue one for the same price, and I might just jump on it.

 

I only found a K&N 2 layer dry racing filter in 3.5", I oiled it since I wanted a little more protection.

 

Bummer. I've had K&N before, and I've done UOA with a K&N and with a OEM Hyundai Filter(Old DD), and found the K&N does in fact let a lot more dirt through. Enough that the particulate readings after 4750 miles are substantially different.

I swapped the K&N back out to the OEM, the particulate levels went back down.

I ended up with a quick, cheapie STP replacement filter for now(the Napa Gold was pretty bad). Maybe I'll try one of these filter lid ones out if I find one on sale/clearance somewhere.

 

I also don't like the oiled filters on EFI vehicles especially. I have seen problems on MAF sensors. I am using the AEM dry flow in my Challenger and Dodge Dakota. I know they flow more air but how well they filter is the question. At least they are a simple clean up when dirty. With my RPM intake and drop base on the 88, the 3.5" fit perfect so my filter was inline with the hood scoop. I almost wonder if an enclosed dual snorkel housing is a better way to go. I plan on one of those heat isolation pans when I get the 88 going again.

 

I was going to say, but others beat me to it: k&n is garbage. They flow so well due to lower ability to filter. This is really noticeable in the diesel truck world, where super sensitive to dirt turbo's get dusted down and destroyed.

Do they make more power? Yes, but is it worth a few hp you really won't feel at the expense of damaging a motor?

Be careful in your decision to purchase a highflow air filter of any brand. For a street car, paper is fine for me.

 

I have been running the filter top for a long time now. No issues. Like 8 years long.

Copper, aren't you running a dual snorkel? Has anyone used a Camaro dual snorkel on a Olds V8?

 

I intended to make a dual snorkel set up. But that became one of those I never got around to it deals.

 

What height of filter are you running?
