70 350 Cam Recommendation

Looking for suggestions as to the largest cam for the lower compression without over camming it

Factory 70 350 2 barrel motor (70k original mile motor)
Figuring 8-9 to 1 compression as its 2 barrel motor
Rpm intake
750 QF
Comp Rockers
Exhaust manifolds-no headers
3.31 gears
Converter doesn't matter as it will be a stick car

Thinking the generic 204-214 or engle 16-18 cam what say you....

Thanks

I had the 16-18 in 2 low comp, heavy cars and they worked well.

Erson TQ40, 220/228@.050, .504 lift on both. It would be perfect for your build.

Will stock springs work with a cam with .504" lift or will that cam mandate a spring change? I ask to learn.

I will suggest a JM 18-20 with Rhoads lifters since I know someone who has that combo and loves it.

Good question as I really didn't want to change springs unless really needed, if keeping it under a certain rpms to avoid valve float I'm cool with that. My main concerns are camming it properly to the compression and don't really want it noisy as in modern fast ramp cams.

skip the 18-20 and Rhoads if valvetrain noise bothers you. The 16-18 is still entirely viable with your stock springs and compression and won't need Rhoads.

Have you considered having Mark custom grind you a cam specific to your application?. If not then give it some consideration. If the Erson cam previously mentioned works with stock springs then going with it is likely a very affordable option.

The factory springs are not correct for that. Besides, why in the world would you want to use 40+ year old springs on a fresh engine? Get the correct springs for the camshaft you pick and you'll be happy for years to come.

It's not just about valve float, but installed height and coil bind are couple more factors that play a large role in how well things work together.

if you don't mind spending a little extra for the right cam, give mike a call or fill out his cam recommendation sheet and he will get back to you via email. he also carries the correct springs and lifters for your application. good luck
