350 R-code little performance
350 R-code little performance
Im currently driving a 1979 Ninety Eight. So far its running ok, but i have some cold start and idling problem. First of all i need to keep the starter turning for about 5-10 sec. while pumping the pedal a bit to fire it up, then i need to give the engine a bit over idling rpm for a minute or two otherwise it stalls.and it has this awful stuttering in idle(stutters once then runs good in a circle of 15 secs circa)
I thought about changing spark plugs and timing chain(may be lengthened), then adjust timing. Is it worth to spend some money in a replacement HEI system?
Then I would like to go over to the fuel system. What do you think about another carb with an intake, new heads, headers? Are there some recommendations what to choose? And should i then add a new cam as well?
Or are less parts more, so that i get good little performance with stock parts, too?
What do you think,Answers appreciated

Start with Carb and check ALL of the fuel lines. I had similar issues on my 78 when I bought it.
Throw a basic tune-up at it at max right now. Once you get the issues sorted out, then worry about the big dollar items...

A good tune up would be good. When you are in there repacing the rotor and cap, make sure your weights and springs move freely on the vacum advance before buttoning it up.
I'm thinking you need a little carb sevice. Its probably the choke or choke pull off. I'd look at it maybe cleaning the carb by diss-assembling it and install a carb kit with a new float. Follow up with a check/adjustment of the timing if needed.
I [I]wouldn't[I] start throwing big dollars and a whole bunch of parts at it right now.
Get what you got right now, running as good as you can. Then you can go from there.

First of all thx for the replies. Maybe you re both right.Things were just a quick idea, ill see if i can get me a new timing chain+ adjustment, check the fuellines, see if i can do a carburetor overhaul.
Money is unfortunately as limited as part supply here
By the way: nice cars you both have there
