350 Crank seal install depth

Any mechanics know the correct depth to install the front crankshaft seal into the timing cover? Should it be flush with the cover or installed to the bottom of the radius on the cover, or to some other depth?

Whack it in with a 2x4 until it's flush with the timing cover face.

My old seal is underflush, set to about the bottom of the radius....so I was planning to set the depth of the new seal to the same depth (underflush, to about the bottom of the radius. Should the seals be set flush or underflush?.

I don't think anyone pays much attention to this. The surface of the balancer that the seal rides on is smooth, and has no particular spot where the seal is supposed to ride (though if it's worn, you may need to sleeve it).

The CSM says,
  • Apply 1050026 Sealer or equivalent to outside diameter of seal.
  • Using Tool BT-6405, install oil seal as shown in Fig. 6B-158.

The picture shows absolutely nothing of practical value.

I just whack it in with a socket.

Frickin' PRICELESS

cite CSM chapter and verse [which I was about to do myself]
followed by "Aw hell, boy, just cram it in there good-n-tight, the 'zact location don't matter none!"

Agree - I measured the depth of the old seal and set the new one to that depth - done

Been awhile since I replaced one. But if I remember correct ,there is a lip that only let the seal go so far, and you need to drive it to that lip.

There are two different types of seals - one with a flange or lip and one without.

Id say a new surface to run against would give u a better seal. The pulley will sit in the original location. Just what id do
