What you are seeing is probably the result of lots of years of running non-detergent oil. Since you are pulling the motor are you planning on rebuilding it while it is out?

well I planned on taking the heads off and oil pan and cleaning it that way. didnt want to take pistons or crank out unless it looks like the cylinder need cleaned and if crank looks like the rest then will take completely apart.

I know that looks bad but I have seen much worse. I have used Simple Green or Purple Power with good results and if you are planning dropping the pan (you should) take a look at the rod and mains while you are there. It will take any mystery out of how the engine was treated in the past.... Tedd

If you could do a leakdown test before pulling the heads it may save pulling the heads twice.

Good luck!!!

Yes they do . Not only 324's but also 303's , 371's , and 394's .
I think it is essential to replace rocker shafts when re-building a first generation Olds V-8 .

Isn't there a freeze plug in the end of the rocker shafts that can be removed to clean them internally? I don't know of any source to find replacement parts for the valve train of early Oldsmobile v8s except a salvage yard (or NOS).

Fusick has new rocker shafts ;
Rocker Arms, Shafts and Push Rods-Fusick Automotive Products, Inc.
The rocker shafts could be cleaned , IF you can get the old plugs out , and IF you can find the right size new plugs .
And then , you still have a clean but worn out rocker shaft .

EXCELLENT!

Thanks for posting the link, $59 isn't too bad for new rocker arm shafts. They even have new rocker arms!

20 years ago I remember salvaging valve train parts off of a 371 in a salvage yard for the 394 that was in my 64 98.

You might want to take another look at the Fusick website. The $59 is for the shaft only. The rockers are $17.50 each so the total for 16 rocker arms and two shafts is $398. When you put these together be sure the oil holes in the shafts are facing down. Don't ask me how I know but it was an expensive lesson. You can also get shafts and rockers from Ross Racing.

Just curious....never had the intake off on my 324. What is that cylinder on the rear passenger side? Is it related to the raoad draft tube that connects in the same area on the external side?

It is a baffle that ensures that only blow-by fumes , and not oil , is discharged by the road draft tube .
