307 not running right

I have a (username) with the stock 307 engine that I swapped the carb/intake to an edelbrock system and it runs ok but a little rough and sometimes not at all, any suggestions on what to do about that? Everything else is stock except I removed the smog system when I replaced the head gaskets but otherwise original.

Did you swap the distributor? The carb won't be properly tuned for a 307 as well.

Computer controlled distributor. The part throttle advance for the distributor is controlled from the ECM. But since the TPS is gone, so is your throttle position. Proper EGR operaton is likely gone, too, since the solenoid is operated by the ECM. At this point, the ECM doesn't know exactly what the engine is doing. So, if things aren't right as far as where the computer maps say it should be for current conditions, distributor timing can lock into "limp home" mode. It probably will idle ok, but it will never run right on the road the way it is with that non-feedback edelbrock fuel system on it. You have to either do away with the CCC system entirely or be very saavy about how it works in what you can unhook and what you can't, or simply put it all back. It's almost an all or nothing deal. IMO, the easiest way is to go get a vacuum can distributor from an older Olds V8 and dial that in, and you'll be much happier.

This is one of the main issues with the CCC system on these cars. Few people are left that really know how to work on them, and leaving others thinking they can unplug that or unplug this and it won't affect the driveability. As you're finding out, that's not the case. Although it's a very basic computer system (and Olds V8 had about the most basic), it wreaks havoc on driveability when it's not all working right.

Here's a good thread on removing emissions equipment from a 307.
