1968 Olds 350 Rocket redline

What is it?

It has the stock cam, which I'm pretty sure is .400/.400.

I think it's redline is about 5500. I have been told that by a few mechs. I did rev it up at the track last week in the staging lanes and I got upto 5600-5700 and then it started sputtering at idle, but only for a few seconds. I told the car I was sorry and it stopped doing that (cars don't have feelings or personallites, yeah right )

Anyway, if anybody knows that would be great

Thanks

Hello, there. I would say the stock cam .400/ 256* would stop making power at around 5000 unless you had a power adder. I wouldn't go over 5500 with the stock oiling system, and even less on a high miler. In my opinion oil restrictors along with a nodular cross drilled/ chamfered crank, higher oil pressure and a deep sump pan are needed to run any higher, up to 6300 or so.

I had a 455 in a 69 442 and it would stop pulling at about 5750. In fact i knew it was time to shift when the valves would float (for just a milisecond). We all know Olds motors are bottom end monsters. They don't need to rev to get you down the road fast. Don't break it trying to get that last 1 horsepower. Be realistic and keep your motor together. Revving your motor at idle is just about the worst thing you can do IMO. Do it under load.

Jeremy, that's cause you've got Oldsmobile running through your veins. My small block will go that high easily but like I said I don't want to damage it. I've got enough cash in it to fund a small country.

I set the redline on my new tach at 5500, but I wanted to set it at 5200.

I'll set it at 5200 then. It gets upto 4400 by the end of the 1/4 mile and 4900 if the advacne is unpluged, so we're good there.

If I put in the Edelbrock 7112 cam (I have the Edelbrock 7111 manifold) or the Mondello 22-25-10 cam, does that mean the redline will be 6500? Of course new cam will be at the rebuild

Thanks guys.

With that cam you are probably done making power by 4500. I did back to back to backs with my 9 to 1 355, 210/216 cam and best ET came shifting the 1-2 at 4600 and 2-3 at 4800. There is no reason to twist it up that high.

I doubt it. Without some serious head work you should be done around 5400, IMO.

An ol' buddy of mine used to say...

"You know you've gone over redline by sharp pains in the back-pocket area and the realization that your engine will fit loosely into a five-gallon bucket..."

Yep, he found out the hard way several times and none of us should follow in his footprints...

I have the 5 heads. I don't know yet if I'm going to "C" heads with the rebuild or not. I'm planning on stainless valves and a 3 angle valve job, haven't decided on which springs or rockers yet. I will be doing high compression pistions

Why in the world would you put "C" heads on it? Compression would go down, runner volume would go up.

You have to do some work or the CR will drop right out, this is true.

If you mill the heads about .020 and use 12.1 to 1 pistions, you'll still get 11.1 to 1 compression.

The preisdent of the Alero chapter's father has a 69 442 with the 350, and "E" heads. This is the same thing he did on his car and that car is a monster. He also just got the Offy intake but I don't know what size carb's he's using.

BTW, he's been told over on ROP that this can't be done and the car don't exist. I've seen it serveral times and heard it run. They have owned the car for 36 years too

and...
...... The second you're broke from a build is when all the hot deals come up on everything you wanted/needed. My buddy just picked up a 70 challenger for $1400, and I also found a cheap/clean 81 delta after I'm halfway done cutting and patching up this rusty body and por-15ing everything.

Just got back from the Busch race at Chicagoland Speedway. Took the Cutlass, got exactly one million thumbs up. I told everyone I could rev it to 9500 if I felt like it. Hey Jeremy how you been. Have you got anything up and running yet?
