$1900 to rebuild #5 heads???

Yeah, those Edelbrock heads are a good deal right now. It is only $115 for that base Jegs converter, it depends how quick you are swapping the trans. I have used a couple of 2004R converters. The Oregon Performance 2000 to 2600 stall lock up converter, flashed at 2400. I imploded it at the track. It was supposedly rated 400 HP, I was a little more than half that from my 403, decent torque though. My current PATC base model 2200 to 2500 lock up converter, flashes at 2300 is much nicer. Less slippage down low, acts completely stock till you get on it.

Aluminum or cast heads!?!?! Thats the question which will get a million answers.
I just built a 350 for my son, I didn't go that crazy with the guts and she is 450hp and 490tq.
I used #8's and ported and polished them myself. Filled the heatrisers as well. I used the home porting thread that is on here and also asked alot of question on how too. Took a while to do it but they turned out amazing.
I could of went with aluminum like alot said I should, but I didn't. I stayed with #8's to keep her stock looking, did it cost me more? I think it did, just didn't add the cost yet. Would I use cast on my next build? Hell yeah!!!!!!Aluminum still need some machining to tweek them to fit.

For the 2004r - get a decent convertor from a good shop. I have bought them from Ckperformance and extreme automatics. FYI. There is a usually a lot more to a 2004r than just a reseal job. Unless you really know the trans condition- it probably needs more. I’ve never found one used that didn’t need a full rebuild. Direct clutch and band is usually toast. Not a hard trans to build, but hard parts are getting very hard to find.

Went through my bill for my heads,
From cleaning, machining to assembly is $1100.00.
Then for valves and springs $300.00.
Total $1400.00
Then my time in my shop for port, polish and fill heat risers, I must be 32 hours into them.
Was my first time porting, next round probably down to 20 hours.
So $1900.00 for a fully set of port and polished is a fair price imo.

What pistons are in your motor right now. Anything but the 6cc dish LF2321 Speedpro pistons will put you way under or way over that number. I had 9.6 to 1 Olds 350 with .065" quench with the 204/214 cam. I had to retard the timing to stop pinging along with cold plugs. Also the stock 403 Qjet was too lean at idle, idled shitty and very bad from idle to part throttle. It ran 14's but was less peppy with less timing at part throttle on the street.

I dug out build sheet from when engine was done. Sealed power 332-AP-30. They look like domed pistons in jegs ad. I thought the builder said he used flat top pistons. The motor was done in 2005, and sat in my garage covered on a stand until memorial day 2018, that wkend is when it ended up in the T/A. So can't expect him to remember what was done to an engine 13 years prior. Cam I believe is a Melling . I am trying to interpret all the part #'s on the sheet by googling #'s. It was a metalic blue 75 350 out of a delta 88. I asked it to be built to 1970 specs , because i wanted a little more than the 170 or 180 hp th 75 motor had, nothing crazy because it was gonna go back in the delta. the guesstimate I was given is 265 as she is now. The carb was jetted it is a not stock 403 qjet anymore. It runs very well and sounds nice, but I want a little more out of it.

Actually those are 24cc dish cast replacement pistons. With your current #8 heads, you probably have 7 to 1 compression, probably not close to 265 hp. The Melling cam is probably their version of the 204/214 cam, which is fine for the low 8 to 1 compression the #5 heads will give.
