Very short reply time?
Very short reply time?
How much time does this site allow for typing a response and posting it? Might I suggest that you increase this to at least 15 minutes? I am not the fastest typist in the world, and it is very frustrating to spend the time typing a response only to have the site kick me out when I try to post it and I have to start all over again!! Is there a way I can increase the time I have to post?

If there is a "time out" period on this site, I've never experienced it. When you log in, do you check the box that says "Remember me?" I don't know that this would solve your problem, but checking that box prevents you from having to log in every time you return to the site as long as you do it from the same computer and your browser allows cookies. Checking it might also have an effect on your problem.
If none of these will work, my suggestion is to see what you want to reply to, log out, compose your response in something outside of this site, like Notepad or a word processing program, then log back in, click "Reply," and cut and paste the response you wrote into the reply box.
Thanks Jaunty.I do not type fast and it takes a little while plus we live in the sticks with dial up type speed internet. For the other responses I can quickly say ********.It will just take a while to type it. Tim
I think Jaunty is on the money with the "remember me?" square.
Unless dial up has its own issues. I didn't know it was still around, but thinking about it I suppose the distances involved in parts of North America might have a bearing.
Roger.

"we live in the sticks with dial up type speed internet"
Note dial up "type." I took that to mean he has DSL or cable or something like that, not an actual dial-up connection like we all remember from the 1980s, but that it's just not a fast connection.
Every so often though the site does have its glitches, even when the 'remember me' box has been checked. They're annoying when it happens, but the good news is it's not a constant occurrence.
I'm kind of glad I took typing in high school as a grade 10 option. It's come in handy during my career and for fun sites like this. Always nicer when you can touch type and see the words going up as you type. The more practice you have the easier it gets. Only real disadvantage of typing responses:
1. Hands can't work as fast as the brain thinks (gotta remember to put brain in gear sometimes)
2. Typed responses are soooo subject to interpretation
Advantage of computer keyboard?
You don't need white out...

If I'm posting more than a couple of lines, I pop open Notepad and type it up in there, then paste it to the thread after a last minute refresh. Keeps me from answering a question that's already been answered 5 times in the time it takes to type. And I type at 45 wpm so it's not just for key pokers.
When posting to arguments, I tend to copy the page multiple times because we all know how some people like to edit their posts after stirring up the pot.

I have had this happen to me a number of times. I always have the box checked, yeah I type real slow, and i will lose it all. My posts tend to be long, and it takes extra time to post photos. I have learned, it's better to use Microsoft word or another notepad program then copy and paste. It really sucks to be typing for half an hour and then poof it's gone.
Kludgy programming by idiots
hey, let's deny the user that option, then kick 'em back to where they were- but THROW AWAY EVERYTHING THEY TYPED IN. I have had job resume' submission sites do that to me, and after the 3rd try, I gave up, it's not worth the hassle.

1. I have lost a couple of long (and brilliantly composed) posts to the evil "Expired Security Token" expired-cookie problem, usually after getting distracted and coming back after more than an hour. I never tried to examine the individual cookies set by the site, but I believe that the one involved in posting a reply is, in fact, timed at about an hour.
As mentioned, as long as you "Preview Post" now and then, you're good, and pressing "Command A" and "Command C" just before posting doesn't hurt either.
2.
Don't talk like that here.

Yeah I have this issue when I type up long-winded descriptions of my problems
I've lost paragraphs of typed stuff before because it's taken me too long to type it in, that's because my login cookies expire after a while...
What I usually do is type up my post in Word or similar and then log in and create a new topic or post a reply, that way I can be sure when I hit that Submit button that my work doesn't get lost.

Thanks for all the replies. That is a lot of responses for something that I thought only happened to me.I usually do not post or reply much on here or anywhere else as I mentioned about my typing skills and slow internet speed. Our internet is beamed from house to house and the main transmitter is located on a farmers grain tower across the road.As for the [don´t talk like that here.] I will refrain from such language in the future even though it is true. Please ask the other offending parties to do the same. Thanks Tim
On a Mac, the Command key (circled in red) is labeled with a "⌘" and a "" (not sure whether a PC will print either of those characters), while the Control key is labeled "ctrl," as in the pictures:

The Command key is for "big" actions, such as Copy, Paste, Quit, Bold, Italic, etc., while the Control key brings up a cursor menu (like the "wrong-click" on a PC mouse), and the Option key is for character composition (making "ñ"s and "ü"s and "é"s, and as the "extra" shift key that gives you "•" and "°" when you press the "8" key.
I have no idea what the keys on a PC do, other than the designated "Crash" key.

To explain my smart *** reply, I wasn't aware that this is problem for some members.
I wasn't trying to be an a**hole, it was my attempt at humor (which obviously there is a serious lack of now days)
I don't understand how come some of you guys have a problem with this.
To test this I started typing, left for lunch my reply window open came back about an hour 20 min. later, finished with no problems.
Is it cause I stay signed in? I mean, I am never logged out since I logged in for the first time on this computer.

No need to explain - you practically need to be writing a book in order to come up against this, as you observed today after lunch.
The day the internet bans wise-@ss responses will be the day that Hell freezes, though, as you note, this concept is lost on some people.
When the response you referred to popped up, I had to read the preceding posts several times to figure out what he was talking about, and I admit, I'm still not clear on it.
Meh. Whatever. He's probably the kind of guy who takes a swing at you if you brush by him in a bar.
The posting problems referred to initially simply have to do with how your browser handles cookies. If it remembers all of them for as long as it's supposed to, there should be no problem at all. In this case, since he's using one of those coal-fired Marconi routers, he's probably also using Internet Explorer, which pretty much explains any problem that anyone ever has with anything on the interwebs.

I think what some of the members were alluding to in other posts was the use of certain words such as a*****e in the post. That's something I agree with - it's just not necessary.
Eric - Consider myself somewhat 'schooled' on use of Mac's. I can type all those symbols too using combinations of ALT + ####, which works fine. I guess that using a simple old desktop PC instead of Mac works for me. I'm happy with my system, and I can tell you're happy with yours. BTW where's the elusive 'crash' key? Must be a feature of Mac that was never introduced with 'regular' PC's or Laptops...
Again,I apologize.I truly was frustrated at the time.I can take a joke as well as make a joke.I guess next time I will just ignore, besides the responses on this one subject really are apreciated.I guess that is why I like to talk to a person by phone as I can get a better feel for them than a typed message.Sometimes a joke at the wrong time can upset a person instead of just constructively answering the question.I did notice that I always had to log on every time after leaving the site ,but for some unknown reason since this happened I have not had to log back on.I did not hit the remember me box either.I think there is a ghost in the machine as they say.I am using something new to me also.My wife and I bought a new tv with smart technology. It gets the internet on the tv screen by way of a wireless router. You can use the tv keyboard that pops up on the screen,or use a wireles keyboard as I do.We have an older laptop, but I try to avoid using it in fear of messing something up.Thanks again,Tim

I personally hate phones with a vengeance. I'd rather drive 5 hours to talk to someone in person than talk to them for 30 seconds on the phone. Gimme a keyboard and I have in the past talked for an entire weekend (event akin to a ham radio DX contest). My mother and my daughter on the other hand, loooooove talking on the yap stick, and they'll call me at work to tell me the most inane things. It's enough to make me treasure caller Id.

I've only once encountered the problem you describe, but I think it was more a pc glitch than anything else.
