So me n a buddy painted my 71 but I'm not really happy with the end results so far...... I wanted a flat finish but i think it's to glossy. Im guessing it's cuz we used a flat clear. Anybody know how to get rid of the shine and small scratches..... lite layer of flat over the clear maybe?? Thanks for the help
This might not apply to you, but I've had problems before when I added a flattening agent to the paint and then added the hardener after that. My paint guy said the hardener reverses the effect of the flattening agent and turns it glossy again.
For flat black I really like the SEM hot rod black. It's a satin black but alot if how glossy or flat it is comes down to how heavy you are on the trigger. The white stuff looks like over spray. That stuff will get everywhere that's not masked and will creep in as it will linger in the atmosphere. You could sand the car with 2000 then 3000 then 5000 and it will leave a satin finish. Like a milky gloss . Do a test panel spray it like you did the car and wet sand until you get the desired finish. I did this once but it took time and was a bit of a science to figure out how to get a nice low gloss but not scratch finish. That's where the 3000 trisak 3m sand paper on a sander and water will help.

Sooo, does it have less shine the more paint or is it the opposite??? And i don't know if this pic does enough justice but the paint on my car almost looks textured like a basketball almost. Does anyone know if this is a wet sand and buff issue? Or is it cheap paint?? Or shitty spray gun?? Appreciate the help!
Looks like something was not done right. You really cant sand and buff a satin other ise it becomes gloss. You can sand it just cant buff it.
If this is your first time spraying it could be user / settings on gun / proper mixing ratio / or you layed it on too heavy and as the underlayers dried it popped the top layers to look like what you have. I did a truck in flat black and its not easy. You have to do light layers first then 2 medium wet coats to flow it out and end up with a very flat surface finish. Keeping the dirt off is the hardest part.
Yea, it's my paint and the rented equipment i used probably wasn't the best..... I'm really lost and don't kno if i should jus keep it that way for now or what I'm thinkin is to tape up the car again and most the whole car one more time but thus time without the clear. What do u think??
I would use a single stage satin black. No clear needed. Satin clears are much harder to work with. What paint did you use ???? I have done my fair share of painting as i a body man ( dont like painting but have ) I will say working with satin clears is a paint in the ***. too heavy and its too glossy too light and it looks like sand.
I work for PPG Automotive OEM, and we're closely connected to the Automotive Refinish business. My counterpart there indicated that we sell a new product, Hot Rod Black, just for the application you describe.
Did you use a clear or just a base as in single stage ????? Like i mentioned there is alot to laying down a satin. laying gloss clear is much easier than a satin single stage and thats easier than laying a satin clear over base.
What was your flash times ???? how heavy did you lay it, what psi did you spray how big of a compressor did you have, how did you separate the moisture out from the lines.
I have use PPG , dupont , eastwood brand, sherwin williams , transtar. You can make a great paint job from cheap paint and you can make a horrible paint job from good paint.
I did a k5 blazer in single stage eastwood brand black sprayed with a cheap gun , Just a quick driveway resto deal. new quarters , doors, fenders. Point being you can make cheap paint look good and vise versa . Take this as a learning lesson and practice on soe junk panels to learn what the paint likes how it sprays etc etc.
