Flat Black Sleeper

Hello everyone!! I am very excited to be a part of this forum and I hope to soak up some of the knowledge here

I have a 1968 Toronado with the original 365hp 455 (non w-30). It is painted (by me) flat black or 'murdered.' The grille is black, the turn signals and soon, the glass will be tinted as well. I am building it to be the ULTIMATE sleeper/rat rod. I don't want it to look 'pretty,' or 'restored,' I want it to look ratty and mean. The engine is being built as we speak to Bill Travato's specifications to make 400hp (at least) to the wheels.

My question is, has anyone ever met another gu who is doing this same type of thing? I have yet to meet another Toro owner who is truly doing an all out hot rod. If there is/has been anyone else, what was the outcome? I am shooting for the 11-12sec 1/4 area, anyone see that as a possibility?

Thanks!!

Max

Max, welcome to our site. We look forward to seeing pics.

I've seen plenty of folks go the sleeper/flat black route, but never on a Toronado before. If you are building the engine right I'm sure you will have a great car.

I believe the transaxle in the Toronado is essentially a TH 400. You should be able to find aftermarket parts for it from any TH 400 rebuild kit.

Welcome.

Ricers do front wheel burnouts too?

The "Terrifying Toronado" was pretty quick.

Another black Toronado was the "High Toned Son of a Bit#h" from the Dark Half movie.
I would buy one just so I could put that on the trunk lid.
The cheap stick-on hardware store mailbox letters make it even meaner looking.
They would go well with your paint job.

Then there is the Mr. Joe Mannix P.I. Barris custom Toro.
Has nothing to do with this really, I just dig Mannix, that show was really groovy.

That Terrifying Toronado is amazing. I can't believe they were able to get those big tires on it. I'm currently stumped as to how I'm going to get traction with the tires I have, although they are the largest I can possibly fit at the moment. And the Dark Half Toro I completely forgot about! Awesome I will post pics of it next week as the build is postponed due to a cracked manifold

Cool idea with the Toro rod.

A junkyard around me had a "batmobile" made out of a 66 Toro. It sat for years until it got hit by passing traffic.

sounds nice!! i dont know about the weight of a toro but my 70 sx455 convert with a 455 runs 12.4's, my motor was rebuilt 30 over my heads were cut for bigger valves and ported, my stock intake was ported 2 match, i have a 270h cam, stall converter, my trans was regeared 2 match and i have 323 rear end, i also use w z manifolds and 2 1/2 exhaust, i bought my car from a speed shop owner he did a very nice job on it!!! it looks stock and runs hard, the trick is gearing it make sure the motor trans and rear match

Of course, in a Toronado it isn't the "rear end" but the transaxle.
