Dual Gate vs. Automatic console

Dual Gate vs. Automatic console
1972 Cutlass Supreme. Just want to verify the fact that the dual gate console is the same as the automatic console except for the top plate (and shifter of course). Is that correct? In other words I can use my existing automatic console and switch out the shifter and top plate and it fits right in? Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Chuck

Cut at the blue lines note the notch on the side where the light is this is where the tab on the top plate will end up. You will see the indication of where to cut it out on the backside of the console. I like to use a dremel type tool with a cut off disk for this type of thing, you have alot of control, then take a file and clean off the rough stuff left behind. Hope this helps you out.

This is perfect information. I can't believe I got such a quick response & with such useful information. How did you get your plastic chrome trim on your console looking that good. Mine needs serious help.
Thank you very much for your input...

No problem glad it helped you out.The center trim with the woodgrain is the only plastic trim, they repop that, that being said on this site there is a thread about a new chrome spray paint I'm going to try that on mine as well as the gauge trim, if it works out it be be a pretty cost effective solution. The large trim around the whole console is aluminum that has tabs you straighten out on the inside, the trim around the compartment, which is also aluminum, is held on by little plastic rivits inside the box they usually get mangled getting them out I replaced mine with some I got off an electronics supplier they worked perfect. The trim on the compartment was rough so I lightly sanded the the really rough spots with super fine sandpaper then I polished it with a buffing wheel repainted the black stripe then gloss cleared it the large trim I just polished and cleared, don't think that is the correct way to do it but it came out pretty good, mabey someone else will chime in with a better way to take care of that.

Hey Chuck. I did see this diagram in my '71 factory assembly manual if you need another point of reference. It looks like Eric has everything well under control here though. Pics really are worth a thousand words.
Is this the same deal as the '72? Says W26 console cut.

hey Eric, what thread are you referring to? I tried to find it but could be here for hours. I would love to find a chrome paint for plastic that looks good.
