The article mentions a "fire red Apollo 442 convertible. Is "fire red Apollo" a color from 1970? I know Buick made an Apollo. It was an X body, wasn't it? I guess Olds just used the Apollo name for that unique 442...
Very cool article though, thanks for sharing.

It was a 1969 model, not a 1970, though. Not sure of the story of the car. Wonder if it still exists?
And yes Buick made an Apollo - X body that was the cousin to the Omega, Nova and Ventura.
Nice article on the Detroit Olds display, thanks for sharing !

You know I've seen late model cars with 4 bucket seats and a center console the entire length of the cabin (a Tesla and a Maserati I believe). It's pretty slick but it makes me wonder if it cuts down on interior room. Being 7ft tall I find it annoying when a bulky console is in the way.

Trying to remember if Viking Blue was on the color chart in 70. It would have been a Toronado-only color if it had.
Neat about Miss America being there. Oldsmobile supplied the year's Miss America with a flashy new Oldsmobile for many years, so I guess the promo appearance was part of the deal.

And if you take the first letters from Nova, Omega, Ventura, and Apollo, what do you get?

From my memory of attending the 1970 Detroit auto show when I was 14. I remember an Apollo like car. It was a four bucket seat 1970 cutlass supreme SX convertible. The name on the signage said "Sundance" The paint faded from orange on the lower to yellow on the upper. The inside of the exhaust trumpets were painted yellow. Last year I posted on this forum asking if anyone could remember that car and had no luck except for one guy that pointed me to an ebay auction for a billing statement showing that Oldsmobile was billed for special paint on a cutlass supreme convertible to be delivered to the Detroit auto show. I now own that document but still have no picture proof that the car ever existed. ~BOB

Sorry for any confusion. I have seen the 69 (though don't know much detail about it) and thought that was the car be referred to in the original article above. However the photo Bens71442 posted is a 1970 with four buckets and appears to be red as well. It is listed as Apollo also. This 70 version is the one I have never seen before.

According to all of the Oldsmobile literature I have seen, including the dealer showroom albums, in '70 Code 26 Viking Blue was indeed a Toronado only color. I have the build sheet (Freemont car) from my '70 442 also listing Viking Blue as it's original, special order color. I don't have a picture of the build sheet here at the office but below is a pic of the cowl tag
