Are 71 and 72 hoods interchangeable?

Are 71 and 72 hoods interchangeable?
Just wondering if a 71 cutlass hood fits on a 72? I have a buddy that works in a weld/fab shop and was thinking about having him bend up some scoops and tig weld them on a hood to make a replica oai hood from steel. I was wondering if 71 and 72 hoods interchange. I have a 72 and don't want to butcher the original hood. I found a rust free 71 hood for $50 but I don't want to drive an hour if it won't fit

The first 4 are correct because they're all metal hoods. You forgot about the W29 2 hoods that were faux louvers (with and without vents)
I wasn't including the W25 hood because that's a no brainer interchange between 71/72 - same exact hood, same exact part number.

Like I said, almost right. I'm not sure why you think I needed pictures to know what a 72 hood looks like, I'm very well versed on them. re: 'chrome louvers'?? Not so. They are 'faux louvers' and were painted body color from the factory, with the exception of the W29 which was black no matter what color the body was.
BTW, that blue car is a terrible example of striping and grill/numerals for a 72 442 clone, not to mention the rocker trim and deck lid spoiler that was never offered in 72. It seems like very few people pay attention to the striping details or what's needed to make that car into a 'tribute' offering. Not sure if I like the blue bumpers, but it completes the theme I guess.

And the photos were not necessarily for your benefit.

407257 - Standard hood (3200, 3636-69, 4200, 4800)
411854 - Standard hood w/AC (3200, 3636-69, 4200, 4800)
407256 - 35Y75 & 35Y78 Hood option (3677, 3687)
411855 - 35Y75 & 35Y78 Hood option w/AC (3677, 3687)
408538 - 35W29 Hood Option (3287, 3677-3687, 4267)
411857 - 35W29 Hood Option w/AC (3287, 3677-3687, 4267)
And of course, as you pointed out, with the W25 hood that makes 7 hoods available for the 72 Cutlass lineup.
So, yes I get that you might not have posted the pics as clarification to me, but it sure appears that way if you go back and look at the posts. I guess you don't know what a W29 hood is or you'd have picked up on the obvious error right away in your pictorial. I did post that hood for you as a picture but you ignored it.
re: how many fenders? How the heck does that relate to how many hoods there are? Get serious. Fenders in parts book always listed them unscripted or pierced for obvious reasons of body repair. Only the OEM production runs had to worry about the proper hydro piercing for each models emblems. That's a rather petty argument, same as how many types of hood springs for the OEM Cutlass hoods.

IDK, I suspect it has something to do with general design and air intake for the non air and air systems. Interesting enough the 71 hoods had cowl piercings on AC and non AC cars.

Well do tell. You have a parts book that lists only 4 of the 6 all metal production hoods. Just for your benefit, here are ALL 6 hoods and part numbers so you can update your information
407257 - Standard hood (3200, 3636-69, 4200, 4800)
411854 - Standard hood w/AC (3200, 3636-69, 4200, 4800)
407256 - 35Y75 & 35Y78 Hood option (3677, 3687)

By the way, we own several original paint cars including a 72 W29

Actually, ALL the W29 metal hoods (AC and non AC) had those extra piercings for the Oldsmobile script. None of the regular hoods had it, as the Oldsmobile script went on the grills. And of course the W25 hood never had piercings as it was distinctive in it's own right.
I've heard from some members who have early production 72 models that are AC equipped and still have the cowl pierced hoods. I believe that to be a production over run from 1971 as the 72 Assembly manual is specific about the hood design and stampings. It seems to be a can of worms for discussion though.

Let me ask my earlier question a different way. What is the difference between the following 2 hoods?
411855 - 35Y75 & 35Y78 Hood option w/AC (3677, 3687)
411857 - 35W29 Hood Option w/AC (3287, 3677-3687, 4267)
