Air Dam Reinforcement - what does it do and does anyone have one?
#41
It's only the 455 cars because the 455's massive torque tries to rotate the earth when stabbing the throttle so they reinforce the plastic part so it doesn't distort.
...and I swear, my hand to God, that's right out of the Assembly Manual!

Must be somewhere I can't find. I looked in 71/72 AMs but can't find that. Can you point me to the page in the AM? I know the 455 is a torque monster, that's why I wanted to build one last year. thx Mike.

Scott, No worries there. If I had one I'd want to keep it too. At this stage I'm more interested in seeing multiple angles of the darn thing so I can try and fabricate one of my own..either one of you up to that?
Since 72 455 cars are much scarcer than 70/71s I don't think there's a lot out there. Even the 70's and 71's had fewer BBOs as a result of insurance issues. That's why the Rallye 350 came along in 70.

Thx Scott. When you do the pics can you also lay out a measuring tape so I can get an idea of scale?

Well Allan, I've been mistaken. I went down to the shop this morning to take off the piece in question and snap detailed pics for you but it isn't there like I thought it was. I was thinking the back piece of the air dam was it the other day when I looked. The air dam is in place but that is it. I took off the air dam (six or seven bolts) and it appears to be made up of two separate plastic pieces stapled together.

This thread sure got derailed and some bad info slipped in back in 2012. I picked one up for my V Code at Nationals last week (bought it last year but finally picked it up in person from the seller). This is what it looks like and how it attaches. 1972 X code and V code only per the assembly manual.

HEY TERRY
Nice find. Those are tough to come by. A minnesota winter or 2 and that light metal gizmo would be toast.
I did talk to metal fab shop about making copies of mine. Was going to be too much time and $$$ so that never happened.

I'm looking at page (sec 11) 104 of the 1972 Cutlass Assembly manual. I can't find any reference that says the 410410 reinforcement was only for X and V code cars. I know they were put on some 455 cars, but again that's just by word of mouth. Can you show me where the documentation is for the X and V codes only?

Put me in line for one too. Ive been looking for over 4 years. I was told inline tube snaged an NOS piece at some point. Ive asked they say they are not sure if they will ever make it or not.

My brother-in-law runs a machine shop and is willing to quote what it would cost to reproduce this if anyone is willing to send one to me. He will need to see it in person. I'll cover shipping back to whomever sends me one. And you don't have to worry because all my cars are '70s except for the 350 '72 so I have no use for this rare piece. :-)

Didn't realize this was such a rare piece. Here's a pic of the one on my 71 442 for reference:

I'll try to get some good pics of a loose one I straightened/primed for a guy here. Hopefully he still has it sitting on his parts shelf. With some work a reasonable duplicate could be made...definitely would be a few hours but the thing wasn't so complex that you would say "no way".
They were likely painted black originally since the "marching orders" seemed to be a black finish on things hanging under the car that might be seen.
I suspect the repro guys like ILT would be doing the math on this piece to see if a repro makes sense.

Maybe if someone could come up with one to copy, a few of us could get together and have 6 or 8 of them built. Be more cost effective to have multiples made you know?Im in depending on price.. Keep me posted
