Air Filter Drenched with Oil!!!

I have a 1964 Olds Ninety Eight, 394, Starfire Engine (394 HP), 42,000 miles, 4 barrel. I've noticed a great deal of oil mist coming out of the PCV valve and consequently my air filter is drenched with oil. (Note: The PCV connects to the intake of the air cleaner). I also often find a puddle of what I think is oil on the engine intake manifold in front of the carb. The PCV valve is the original big metal PCV that came with the car. I checked the cylinder pressures with all spark plugs removed and engine hot, and got the following numbers: cyl 1 (231 psi), cyl 3 (201 psi), cyl 5 (209 psi), cyl 7 ( 196 psi), cyl 2 (190 psi), cyl 4 (190 psi), cyl 6 (189 psi), cyl 8 (195 psi). **Note: The '64 Olds manual says to check cylinder pressure with all plugs removed. Another ancient car repair manual my old-timer buddy gave me says that the psi should be 190 psi, and min and max within 20% of each other...... so I'm good there. Any idea of what is causing this problem? Maybe it's the PCV. Should I replace the ancient PCV valve with a modern one? I cleaned the old one out but it didn't help. Regards, "Oily" in Maryland

I bought a old 80's Pontiac Phoenix (I know , a completely different type car) as a 10 year old car for real cheap because the engine was shot- filled up air cleaner with oil- blowby, etc. I found the rubber hose to the pcv was routed wrong and was smashed between the air cleaner and valve cover, as the air cleaner was tightened down it smashed it closed. I fixed that and drove the car for 10,000 miles. Point being make sure you have good vacuum to the pcv valve and maybe it would be a good time to replace it. Of course with the age of the engine you may still have excessive blow by, even though the compression seems ok. Let us know how it works out.

The PCV should be connected to a manifold vacuum source. The air cleaner housing is connected to the opposite side valve cover as a vent.

I do not think that is correct for 64 and 65 cars.

There is no pvc or vent in left side valve cover. Engine pulls outside air through oil fill cap and into air cleaner. Possible excess blow by or oil drain back holes in cylinder head are clogged with old valve seals. Do you have smoke when starting?

My '64 looks similar but not exactly like your '65. I have a vacuum line attached to the PCV valve. My PCV is archaic. It is simply a metal plate in side a can. I doubt it seals anymore. I'm going to replace the old/original with a modern PCV valve and see what happens. Thanks!

Yes it is a archaic set up, and later systems function much better. Later set ups pull fumes from one valve cover to the other then into the intake. I still think if you have that much oil you have other problems.

Ok, I see now. As you said maybe a get a later model left VC and run an additional line to the air cleaner, with a late model PCV.

The CV606 valves are still readily available ;

I would try that first before trying to install an alternate system .
