1972 Cutlass Supreme Alternator

I am needing to replace the alternator in my 72 CS. It has a stock Rocket 350, a/c and stock radio. What alternator do you guys recommend? Here are a couple of pictures of my current one.

TIA!

You have one of the oddball 1972 "transition" alternators. These use the 10SI case but have the guts from the 10DN external regulator alternators. When you say "replace", are you looking for a direct replacement or an upgrade?

Thanks Joe. I actually may just rebuild the one I have. It is working but the bearings sound rough. I have never rebuilt one before. Is it fairly straight forward?

Its pretty easy to do. You may as well replace the brushes while you are in there. Bearings and brushes should be available at a local auto parts store.

HAHAHAHAHA

Good luck with that. Here in the mid-Atlantic, NO ONE stocks parts for starters or alternators, only rebuilt units. Yeah, they can order the parts, but why make two trips to the store when RockAuto drops them at your doorstep in a couple of days.

Heck, I just stopped at NAPA this morning. They don't even have 1.5" brass freeze plugs in stock.

You might be right Joe. I looked on rockauto and if brushes are ordered for a 72 it will be the wrong brushes. They show the earlier type for that year. I don't see a needle bearing either. He will need to look at 1973 parts (10SI) He may be better looking in ebay. Prices are cheap, but I can only guess at the quality of the bearings. I can supply them if necessary.

Likely a 55 or 63 amp alternator. My 72 has a 61 amp (odd) with the DN connector as well. I guess that's for the electric defog on glass.

Look again. It's listed under Commutator End Bearing. They show three, sourced from both SKF and National.

Thanks guys. I can NEVER find any parts locally so I will order from Rock Auto. Can you tell me if these are the correct parts from them?

skf is a good brand. my personal preference on the 6203 bearing is with rubber shields, but the metal should be ok. wrong brushes. look for brushes under 1973 probably less expensive than the ones you have shown.

Stellar KNOWS alternators. He converted my external voltage regulator to an internal and replaced bearings, etc.
