330 Rebuild

330 rebuild
Where did you get your 330 engine parts from? I want to rebuilt my 1964 Cutlass Convertible 330, I look at Supercarsunlimted and Egge engine parts. Can you tell me the difference between the early and late 330 engine, are the heads the difference? Any information would be most helpful! Thanks, Jim

Honestly I am not that knowledgeable on these engines. I researched on this website. I used 7a heads with egge pistons. And if I were to do it over again I would keep the forged crank out of this block and used a 350 because of piston availability.

There are 2 different pistons, low comp and hi for the 330. There are 2 different intake gaskets, a 4 piece for the mounted tray in the lifter galley and the turkey tray for without. Yours most likely is the first.

Also be aware that the Egge pistons are aftermarket cast and from what I have found are short on compression height, just like other aftermarket cast pistons. Keep this in mind as the engine's compression ratio will be lower than expected unless machine work is done to compensate as 330jetstar said.

Ok now I have done the can break in and finally started my engine after the rebuild. One issue in having is timing. I bought a new harmonic balancer and the timing marks were on the opposite side of the original which was passenger now driver. So I purchased the driver side timing marker however now with the engine in the car and the water pump hoses on I can't time it at all because I can't see the marker. Now can I simply mirror the timing markers on the balancer scribe deep enough lines and remount my original timing marker. What a mess. I ordered the balancer from summit using 1964 year when ordering.
