NICE ! what year Catalina. Hopefully we can hit the track labor day Monday. Doing a few updates next weekend and and going to try an 800 CFM DP next time out. Hopefully we can back that 11.89.

Its a 63 we had between friends that has waited forever to get going so I committed to it two years ago.

Nice Job Copper!
I know what you mean Mark and I did try rejetting I was just trying to keep things simple. Different fuels have different specific gravity, aromatics, dielectric, and caloric values. I should have mentioned that this was back in the day before 110LL (low lead) avgas. Mind you the older avgas did work well in our 12.5:1 roundy-round SBC with hotter plugs. Generally the higher the octane the slower the fuel burns for a given compression ratio. Increasing the compression ratio creates a denser air/fuel charge which changes the deflagration rate (speeds it up), hence a lower compression ratio does not allow for peak pressures to occur just after TDC and you end up with a lot of burning air/fuel going out the exhaust. Increasing the ignition timing will not change the deflagration rate, it (timing) just changes when the peak pressure occurs but it does not optimize burning, the air/fuel charge will still be slow burning. So going to a higher octane may help but there will be a point of decreasing returns. Say whaaat, yah I've been studying the combustion process for 40 years now.

Sorry if I confused anyone, I'm not trying to be a smart ***, just trying to be helpful and save people some time & money.
Note: There is some controversy about deflagration so I'll give you the version I got in the military and automotive science. It's the process of consuming a fuel from the point of ignition to detonation (subsonic to supersonic - controlled to uncontrolled) (not engine knock) where the heat of the burning fuel front ignites the layer in front of it, this also causes pressures to rise creating a denser air/fuel charge, further increasing the rate of change. This is why a line of black gun powder always goes poof at the end, the pressure wave surrounds the powder at the end. Oh even nuclear weapons have a deflagration according to military studies.

Well we had the car out last weekend. Finally fixed that bog but its a lengthy explanation of various little issues the carb had. I fix them and then it was back to square one. I also made a pinon angle adjustment.

Got to the track real early . My first pass was a 13.16 the car was spitting and popping. I capped the exhaust as I had the car running good through the mufflers and then I clicked off a 12.38. which is not bad through the mufflers. I went back to the pits pulled the caps off and went up 4 jet sized. Next pass was a 12.04 then a 12.02 an 11.99 and then a 12.03. After that 12.03 pass I decided to go up 2 jet sized on the primary and then on the next pass ran an 11.91 @ 110 mph with a 1.63. Im just glad I was able to back up the 11.89 .

My winter list will pretty much be a torque converter and a bigger carb. I think this set up is under carbed. IM at 81/89 jets which much bigger than what the 750 HP came with. I did not get to run the vac gauge. that will ultimately tell the tale. I think this combo can see an 11.7x without a massive gear change. Although it was are last time out and we didn't go any faster ., the car hooked well and the carb finally worked well.

This was a 12.03 pass

this was an 11.99 pass

the 11.91 pass.

You would do yourself well to call Kenny @ PTC, he is very capable of supplying the best foot brake TQ converters I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot.

Well we cemented the car as an 11.8 car today .My wife and I took the car out one last time and we clicked off an 11.85 and an 11.86 both with 1.59 60 ft times and the 11.86 was 110 mph and the 11.85 was 111 mph. Car ran great launched great. I had planed to make some changes but im really happy with the car. maybe down the road but im just going to enjoy it next season and try an index class.

enjoy.

Thanks guys. @bernhard next year I plan on running slotted mags to get it more period correct for the look i want. Unless I find some cragar Super tricks. Those will be for race use and the centerlines will be for the street.

Tremendous performance congrats !

Bernhards comment (Nice clean solid pass !) motivated me to watch immediately. I knew she jumped off the line but didn't realize to what extent till i did a frame by frame.

Judging from the clothing the weather was nice and cool, i'm assuming weight and everything else was right where you wanted it ? Do you think you peaked as is ?

As it sits.... I dont think i got much more room for growth. With a better converter and taller numerical gear. I think mid 11's are a reality but ... That's for another story lol. Pretty happy with how it is.

Many years ago I spoke to 380racer on another Olds site and was asking him about wheels up. If i remember correctly he told me his ride started showing air from mid 12s on down. He had an absolute beast of a small block.

Sounds like your car is performing very similarly to this point, weight and suspension must be close...

The last set up would slightly lift the left front and that car ran a best of 12.22.
