557ci Rocket Build

I’m doing two of these for a customer. This is the first of the two;

4.390 bore Racetec pistons
4.60 stroke Bryant billet crank
7.00” K1 rods
2x4 Sniper setup
Old Edelbrock low rise 2x4 intake
Ported Gen III Edelbrocks
9.8:1
238/246@.050 hyd roller

561hp/640tq

This intake isn’t the best, especially when it’s trying to feed 557ci. Good tq, not a lot of hp. Needs bigger headers too. BUT, the torque comes in early and strong. It’ll probably break a few driveline parts!!

At first I thought it was the first engine of two, for a boat. But I assume from the front drive that isn't the case? Can you share what the engine(s) are going into?

What do you think it would make with a more well suited intake and headers?

This one is going in an early 70’s A body.
A good victor with a 950 would make well over 600, it made 582 with an out of the box Victor and a 750 during break in.
But this is a relatively mild build, good not great heads and not a lot of cam for 557ci build.

Why the small cam? Is this a street car and not a race car?

Also, nice build and nice looking engine.

Update;
No more Snipers as there isn’t support for those anymore.
Instead it got (2) 800 Cfm AVS 2 Edelbrocks and a Progression Ignition Dist.
Final numbers are 575hp/653tq. Actually I did a lower pull that made just shy of 660 at about 3000rpm. Dyno sheet to follow.
Note; any of you that still think you need an ignition box for a street or street/strip build of this power level are fooling yourselves. This is an electronic Dist, with a $50 coil. Didn’t miss a beat to nearly 6000 rpm.
And another myth busted, wait till you see the BSFC between these carbs and the Sniper. Some of you will be surprised, I wasn’t.

Interesting build. No more support for the Sniper? Is it because they Gen 1? How did you like the AVS2?

I'm not much of an engine guy, but those look terrific and it's fun to learn what you're doing all these decades after these blocks stopped being cast.

Also great to hear you like the Progression Ignition distributors. I've used them in 2 big cars and they're a real step forward over weights, springs & vacuum cans. I hope they're making a profit so they'll be around long term. The product is great for us amateurs.

I still have a soft spot for quadrajets, but I'm a computer guy so I keep watching the multiport EFI space and debating whether to make the leap. But then I look at my simple mechanical qjets, check the O2 sensor lambda values and wonder whether EFI would really help me $2,500 bucks worth. Guess I'm cheap. Or sentimental, or both...

Anyway from far away, great to see your builds.

Chris

Yep, Sniper 1 is done.
Haven't used one of these carbs in a while. It was pretty good right out the box, but did need a rod and spring change.
I spent more time on the timing curve and valve lash instead of the carb. A welcome experience.

Looks similar to one some dumb kid built right after high school. Ran good while it held together.
