When calling do NOT ASK "will this fit a '69 Cutlass". They will invariably say yes. Ask what it came out of. Chevy has a different bolt pattern that Buick/Olds/Pontiac. Some units have both patterns. There is also long tail & short tail. I believe a long tail can be made to work with a custom drive shaft but a short tail would have come with your car. JMO but I think you are better off finding a core and having it gobe thru rather than buying a used one that the seller says is good.

Not too far away....pretty much a core price right there...

$75 for the convertor and I'll give you the transmission.....

jp, you will also need to ask if someone has a drive shaft and a yoke for a 68-69 with turbo 400.... I say 68-69 because I think you probably have4 an O type rear, and I am unsure if all 70-72 had them, I don't think so.

There was no th400 available in an 85 cutlass.

I have a rebuilt th350 here in great shape if you are open to shipping. Not a "craigslist rebuilt" trans. An actual rebuilt trans I will warranty.

Make sure it's a short-shaft TH400 too.The long-shafts from the big cars can be converted, but it involves taking the trans apart.

Hmm that scares me now, Guy said he got it out of a 1985 cutlass and it is TH400 and J(chicago) says they didn't come with a TH400 I'm not saying the guy is lieing but now it sound fishy, when I look at the TH400 I can tell if it is a real TH400 BOP? Plus anyway to tell if it is in good working order? Myabe it came out of a diff car or maybe the guy who own the cutlass did a swap him self?

I would buy the TH350 rebuilt you have J(chicago) but last time I look at shipping for a tranny it was 500 just to ship :P

The 85 Cutlass wouldn't have left the factory with it, but it might have been put in with a bigger engine as a modification at a later date.

The more I found out about automatic transmissions the more I realise I don't know, but it seems there are a lot of variables with tailshaft length and bolt pattern. I have been told by experts that the internals can vary as well. IMO you should have your own unit overhauled by a reputable shop, you know yours is the right one.

Roger.

JP, I seriously think you would be fine with a turbo 350, think about it, find one that works, and someone will stand behind. ( both J-chitown and 507 ( Brian) have EXCELLENT reputations, brian is in Pennsy... so get to the Verazano, over the Goethels, and on to Pa... , or ask J what the shipping would be... you get to use the yoke, driveshaft etc etc from your power "slide" etc... then when and if you build your next engine, you can either upgrade to an overdrive, have the turbo 350 beefed up, or sell the turbo 350 and and have a new turbo 400 built.

this will be a very nice upgrade, your getting it from a relaible source(s), reduces your costs by reusing your yoke, drive shaft etc... it takes some decent change to get a built motor, even a semi stocker like mine, so it is better to do it in steps....

buy from someone you know or is known....

JP I still think it best to buy from someone that you know or known, instead of strangers ( hmmm wait we are all strangers or at least strange)

here are some finds from central jersey
this is a short tail shaft

Doomah did your car originally have a TH350? If so get it rebuilt. Its often cheaper to simply have the orig trans rebuilt. No messing with guesing on tail shafts, bolt patterns etc...And the unknown factor of the used rebuilt craigslist unknown no warranty, way to risky IMO. You went through all the trouble of R&R-ing the trans only to find out its junk. Now you have to do it all over again. The cost is not much more than the prices your discussing here. Should be able to get a TH350 rebuilt with a converter for well under 1K, $6-800ISH. Then you can specify shift kit or any up grades you want and have a warranty to boot. Some trans shops stock rebuilt units on their shelves with a warranty. Jegs & Summit sell warranted units too. I purchased a street/strip/semi manual valved 400 with satruday night special converter shipped to my door for $1100.

If its bolted to an olds engine its a Jetaway.
Shipping might not be as bad as you think. I'd look into it from a board member.
If you plan on a transmission shop doing the swap they should be able to source a transmission for you. Think about what you will do for a shifter as well.

if you are paying to get the work done a Turbo 350 will come out to ALOT less money than a 400.

Actually, Jetaway transmissions were late 50's-early 60's transmissions.

64-68 2 speed transmissions were Super turbine 300s

People just kept calling them Jetaways, anyway.
