You can buy shims at any napa or most auto parts stores.

Correct, you can. I don't want Dorman brand shims on my restoration. Thanks

Not only that who would go so far as to check starter shims when judging for show.

I wanted the best ground for my starter, so I cleaned the block and starter, and made a copper shim. Just buy the copper sheet in Lansing, and fill the tires with Lansing air. lol

No harm in wanting something correct, right? The shows I participate in have that level of scrutiny.

Do you have the shims I’m looking for since this is a parts wanted ad? Or are you just attempting to be humorous with your played out “Lansing air” gaffe.

You are all missing the point here. Look at his restoration post and then think of something intelligent to say. The level and attention to detail is off the chart. That’s his choice but this car will stand among very few.

I have never heard of any show where the judges were allowed to remove any part of the vehicle being judged. That being said, how do the judges know the shims are not GM.

I have disassembled at least a couple dozen 66-7 400s and 425s, and 455s. None had a starter shim. Fifty years later we have to wonder how many of the shims we might find are OEM. Have you determined what thickness you need for correct engagement of the starter drive gear to the flywheel teeth?

And because you’ve never seen it, it must mean it’s not possible? Is that the point you’re trying to make?

Zinger! But I should expect that type of response from the guy making posts about what color paint to use on his gas tank...

Everybody has their own way to restore a car, if you have nothing to offer please keep comments to yourself.

I think it is great that there are guys wanting to restore a car to original down to the smallest detail. Starter shims would be a small detail. How often do you get to see a 50 year old car as it was the day it was born. The time money and research needed to do this would be overwhelming. I have a stack of starter shims of different thicknesses some are OE and some are aftermarket (not Dorman) that I bought many years ago.The originals are used from cars that I have worked on. I had a starter alternator rebuild shop for 40+ years. The majority of the shims I have all look the same shape even the aftermarket shims I have. I would like to know what the difference is so I can sort them. Can you tell me what the difference is? If you prefer to keep it a secret to keep an upper hand for judging I understand. The ones I have are the same, other than various thickness. Both ends, length, and width are identical.Could there be a difference in composition? After many years of rebuilding and installing starters I have seen a few Olds that needed shims. In most cases it was because an aftermarket housing or low quality drive had been used.

Aren’t you the guy that put a “le bra” on your Cutlass?

There is nothing wrong by putting a "Le Bra" on your car. The headlights tend to sag on older cars!

pontiac uses them, BOP all use them, as for gm shims, how can you possibly tell the diff, my Pontiac has one on from the factory, it has no marking on it. I have a stack from my mechanic, he has an all gm repair shop. I’m not sure how you know what is factory.
your factory manual should have a page showing how to measure for the correct shim. It does in the Pontiac manual.

Are you going to pull the starter to verify the shims are genuine GM manufacture?? Never heard of a car judging where any part was pulled to verify authenticity, even concours judging.

To go along with the GM shim, get a tank of correct air from the city where your car was made in and put in the tires. If your going correct, all must be done.

Sorry, but that won't pass the sniff test. Much less air pollution now than back then. I would also like to see what an OE shim looks like. I may have a few.

Lol, your rite.
I’ve never seen any maker marks on any shims.
there’s a Norwood private show in Ohio, the guys let the air out of their tires and fill,up with Norwood air. Lol. Why not

You obviously have some sort of bias against factory restored cars. Please, tell us how these cars were meant to be driven and how you drive your car all over the place.
