Want: HEI or Pertronix Elec Ignition

Money is tight and looking for an electronic ignition upgrade for my 68 Cutlass with 350 Rocket

Pertronix 1181 or 91181 would work out.

I have an electronic distributor with a MSD pick up and a 6A box if that would work for you?

I went to Pertronix in my stock distributor and couldn't be happier with the result. Looks completely stock until you look in the distributor cap window or count the number of wires coming out from under the distributor. The car works great, the installation was easy. Well worth the money, in my opinion.

Yeah, I would prefer a Pertronix setup because my motor is pretty much stock and the install seems easier. But I am on a budget here and going to go with the best deal I can find. I don't think I will benefit too much more from a MSD box.

You can shop around and find several prices on Pertronix. Keep in mind you will need a new set of wires with the GM distributor. I have used Pertronix on my boat and three of my friends cars and I think they are great. I would have used one on my 72 Cutlass if they had been available back then. The diameter of the cap is a lot bigger on the GM unit also.

Pertronix 1181 (Ignitor) is about $63 on Amazon. I just bought one from local parts store for $84, then decided to look on-line. Since the 71181 (Ignitor III) is $113 on Amazon, I'm going to return the one I bought and go for the better unit.

Ignitor III incorporates adaptive dwell control, adjustable rev limiter and multi-spark on top of the basic electronic upgrade over points, for less than twice the price and all under the cap. I can't argue with that. Only down side is I'll have to go with a new coil, too, and possibly replace the solid-core plug wires.

If you decide to go the hei route I have an extra in good shape I'd sell for $25 plus the ride.

Question for you guys using Pertronix. When upgrading the distributor cap and rotor is there a specific model to go with? I noticed some are male and some are female. Looking at the MSD Cap and Rotor which is around $30 to replace my stock once I get the Pertronix in there.

Summit search suggests this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8442

Just wondering if the cap has to be exact to the stock or if a male connector cap would work. Would that mean I would just need to get matching wires? Thanks

Get which ever one you want just make sure to get the correct wires for the cap. The original caps were female.
