S FL or GA 73-77 Cutlass axle or 79-91 caprice
I am in need of an open rear axle, 28 spline 8.5 10 bolt. It can be any G3 A body or any B body with 30 spline and 8.5 77-89. I am located in south Florida but drive to central Georgia once a month.
thanks,
Dan

A Buick Roadmaster sedan just showed up in the Clearwater LKQ yard. If you are into pulling your own parts, it should have either a 2.56 or a 3.08. There is also a pair of Caprices in the Tampa LKQ, and a pair of them in the Largo LKQ. I do not know the gear ratios of the sedans, but I believe at least one has a 2.56. I will be checking the Roadmaster today for its gear ratio.
There is a 91 Roadmaster wagon in the Tampa LKQ yard. They have a slightly wider rear by about 2 inches. It has a 3.23 open rear. There is an 85 Pontiac wagon there too.
From what I have read, the housing for the 2.56 is the same as the other housings, but the carrier is different, because of the huge pinion gear. I believe you can mount another carrier if you want to use an original 2.56 rear with other ratios.

You stated that any B body with 28 or 30 spline axles will work. Now you say that you need 28 spline axles.
The B body 95 Roadmaster sedan that just showed up at the Clearwater LKQ yard is a 30 spline axle car. It is a pick-n-pull yard. The car has 2.56 gears (GM8). You will have to pull it yourself. If your gears and carrier are compatible with the Roadmaster housing, like you said, you can put your carrier in the housing, and use your 28 spline axles.
If you need axles, getting them from a junk yard is a little scary. The right axles are usually worn excessively, but the left axles are usually fine. I do not know of any cars in the yards right now that would have 28 spline axles.

Original post...
Above is the original post...28 spline...but I can see how it's confusing. I'm going to go up to LKQ Saturday morning as they show 3 B bodies on inventory. I managed to score a 3.42 posi out of Roadmaster a few years ago for my brother's '77.
Big picture...I have options. I have a 28 Spline Eaton posi in my garage. Best scenario, I get an open 28 spline rear end and throw the Eaton differential in there. I'm going to look at LKQ and if they have a posi with a desireable gear, I'll just pull that and sell the Eaton.

I do not know what the other ratios are. Be careful, some of the 91-96 sedans came with 7.5 inch rears. If the cover and bolt pattern are not like yours, it is a 7.5 inch. 91s have 30 spline axles.

Yep, learned that the hard way under my Neighbor's '84. That's what started this whole mess. Figured a car that size they would put a 8.5 axle in but nope...it's got the little ears instead of the big ones....poopoo.
