Will a steel rim off a Caprice make a good spare?
Hi. I'm basically wondering if a steel rim off a 1990 caprice is the same lug pattern as my 82 Delta. My local junkyard has said they have a few caprice but no big body Oldsmobiles. I want a full size spare and could probably get the rim and tire for around 20 bucks.. just curious before i go over there.. it's not very far but i work so much it would be kind of a pain to go out there for nothing. I figured they would be the same since they're both 80s GM big body designs, but, never know
if not does anybody know what other cars share the same size rim that i could use for a spare?
thanks

thanks for the reply. so basically i have to wait for another olds to come along or i just have to try my luck and go over there to see because there were various trim and option packages that could have affected the steel rims.
I guess i could order one online, if anyone knows a good site to look. But i'm sure they'd want to much and it would be rim only, no tire. Sigh. It's not a huge deal, but i never was a fan of donut tires and with the condition of the roads out here a donut will just lead to damage to the undercarriage.

You're unfortunately missing the point. Even another Olds could have the wrong bolt pattern. You simply need to go over there and measure the rims they have. As for applications, the cars with 11" front rotors have the 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern. Cars with the 12" rotors have the 5 x 5" bolt pattern. Any 1977-1990 full size GM (Delta 88, Caprice, Bonneville, LeSabre) is a potential donor. Be aware that all wagons got the HD brakes and large bolt pattern in this time frame.
So i'll have to measure the rims and see what's the exact same. I'm willing to bet my Delta has the 5x4.75 pattern, considering it's a civilian variant not for fleet use -- If my car doesn't have HD brakes/ 12" rotors, then basically that means that wagons are out of the question. I'll have a bit of hunting to do.
Thanks, Joe.
Perhaps this will help
The cars with a 5 on 4.75 bolt pattern had a 7/16" stud (later 12mmx1.5) and a 3/4 o.d. lug nut on them. The cars with a 5 on 5 bolt pattern had a 1/2" stud and a 13/16" o.d. lug nut on them. This held true for Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, & Olds. If the car has the O.E.M. lug nuts on them, it should be easy to determine what you need.
