Need an Engine Wiring Harness for a1984 Hurst Olds
I am in need of a 1984 Hurst Olds wiring harness. My car is a barn find and the mice have destroyed all of the wiring. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one Thanks James
Be aware that there are two "engine wiring harnesses", one for the traditional engine electrical functions that connects to the firewall connector under the brake booster and a completely separate ECU harness that operates the carb, distributor, and all the emissions functions that comes through a grommet under the HVAC box.
As noted, there are differences between VIN 9 and VIN Y harnesses, and differences from year-to-year. The basic harness is similar, but a few wires will require modification if a correct harness is not used.
Was the 86 to 88 442 VIN 9 with stighly less HP. Finding a 84 VIN 9 will be hard to find.
Yep. ALL 84 H/Os were 307. They were the only G-body Olds not hit with the late fall 1983 307 V8 restriction. Right about the time they were getting built, there was a foundry problem which put limitations on 307 production. They only allowed big cars and the H/O to skirt the restriction. I got a bulletin somewhere around here that talks about it.
The A/C circuit is slightly different for the VIN 9 vs. VIN Y. Additionally, the VIN 9 carb has an idle speed solenoid instead of a vacuum operated idle load compensator. They generally match up well, but there are some minor differences. That's what I can gather for the engine compartment right off the top of my head. Your best bet is to get a Chassis Service Manual, aka CSM (where have you heard that before?) that includes CUTLASS SUPREME on the cover (it does cover the H/O inside), and the accompanying electrical manual for your car. You should be able to troubleshoot and tune your 84 H/O with them. There are similar looking manuals for Ciera, etc., which you don't need. So get the right one. Electrical manual is for all series. There's also a thin electrical manual supplement if you think you would need it. I never found it of much use.

They all are. Your H/O uses a VIN 9 307, which was unique to the 84 H/O. All other Olds 307s that year were VIN Y with less HP and some small changes to the wiring harness (like the use of a vacuum idle control on the VIN Y vs a solenoid on the VIN 9).
You might? find someone parting one, or with a stash on www.gbodyforum.com. I haven't had much luck selling there, but there does seem to be a fair amount of people there with parts. No G bodies left here in the yards, the pick a part model has seen to that. Speaking of pick a parts, the www.row52.com site could be used to locate a Donor, but good luck getting anyone to respond to your wanted ad. But, maybe, it could be used to locate a suitable Donor within a day's drive.

I have the body harness I just need the carburetor & distributer, computer command control. As Joe said the VIN 9 uses a throttle kicker solenoid. I have tried M&H, Americanauto wire, Painless, some Oldsmobile only junk yards everybody has things through the 1970's. The only way to get one is from a junk car. I already have the Service Manuals. I am very good with wiring & electronics, I fix old stereos for a hobby. There is not much of the original wiring left, not enough to repair. Bonus, took off the Q Jet to rebuild it today & the body rusted so much a piece by the secondary is missing, probably because of the mice mess. So now I have to get a different carburetor. Thanks ... P.S. my car has AC & Cruse control
Uric acid / ammonia in Rodent **** is very corrosive. I've seen recently an individual here who found two NOS carb bodies out there so they exist. Quite a few Carb specialists out there, also, they should have parts. Have to wonder, if you have your original harness connectors, M & H can't build a "from scratch" harness, providing you sent them the remains of your harness, and perhaps a reprint of the original engine harness diagram?? Could have sworn I viewed their catalog a while ago, and they did have a small bit of early eighties stuff available.

BTW, ALL 80s Olds G-body VIN 9 cars were required to have A/C option installed. Just how it was.
newexguy, I called them and they only had Chevy g bodys up 'till '82. No Olds, and no after 82. No digital pictures right now, father has the digital camera on his vacation. Butterflies have rusted to the bores, and the rust dripped down into the intake. Thankfully it's aluminum and can be cleaned. Rocketman/Bob: That would be amazing if you have the exact parts ! email on it's way. My nephew is coming to visit on the 17th. He is 15 and car crazy with a 1990 V8 Lexus of his own and wants to learn how to wrench on stuff. Trying to gather these rare parts I didn't even know I needed before then so we can return this Hurst to the road.
