Hood

Looking for a hood for a 71-72 Cutlass S -442 it would be nice if it was within 2to3 hundred miles of Idaho Falls, Idaho no rust if possible.

Be aware that there are differences in the 1972 hoods. All 1971s came with the vent openings at the base of the windshield. In 1972, only the non-A/C cars got the vents. A/C cars were smooth there. And since every one of these cars has a repro O.A.I. hood these days, there must be a bazillion of these hoods leaning against the wall in everyone's garage.

LL Classics is in Idaho. You might try them.

Thanks for the info I wasn't aware of that information. I have an ac car and the hood I have is from a non ac car but is rusted through right in the middle. Therefore I have been looking for a louvered hood. Still can't find either on though.

There is some good info on those pages. Please note that the fake, decorative louvers out in the middle of the hood are different features than the cowl line piercings, which are real and functional.

The upshot of all this is it is one metal hood that had a lot of variations. Cutlass S and 442s got the fake louvers, which were body color insets on S and black on 442. All other cars got no-louver hoods. If you had AC ib 72, you got no piercings at the cowl. If you had no AC, you got piercings. All 71 cars got piercings. The correct hood for your car is a louvered hood with no cowl piercings if it is a 72, and with cowl piercings if it is a 71. Louver insets to be body color. However, I would fully agree with deciding to put a cowl piercing hood on an AC 72; I think it looks better, and doesn't hurt anything. I also have no beef with blacking out the insets like a 442, if you like that look.

I don't have an extra with the chrome loovers. But if you get over to Southern Oregon (Medford) I've got several flat hoods from 71-72. If you could pick it up $25 with the trim over the grills, or free without them. I've got several to choose from. John
