Heads for 455 Wanted

Well I picked up a used 455 to replace my 350, and got a great deal on it, but it had the J pollution heads, so I am seeking a pair for good heads for my build without paying for the Alum heads

Thanks yall

Jim

Why not spend your money and fix up the J heads instead of spending money on heads and then spending money on cleaning the new ones up? "J's" can be made to really perform for the street and the strip too.

I have a set of G heads that were ported by Glen Knowlton. Took them off because I switched to Edelbrocks.

Best e.t. with those heads was 11.74. I have been kicking around the idea of selling them, but the shipping of them is the problem.

I have a set of GA cores that I could sell for $75.00 plus the shipping, but honestly, this day-in-age,it would be more practical to go with a new set of Edelbrocks,UNLESS you can get a deal on a set that someone already did,and they aren't screwed-up.
CutlassEFI had a nice set of fresh GA's on here for $750.00.That's a good price.I just know that if you start with a core, and do all of the needed work to rebuild them, plus do some porting, you would be better-off getting a set of Edelbrocks.

What exactly costs so much in "rebuilding" them? Because the Edelbrock ones are like $850 a pop, so I highly doubt that redoing the heads would cost THAT much unless these heads are REALLY REALLY SCREWY

But I don't know, I have never had to redo heads before

Trust me,it all adds up.I've done a few different sets, and have used a few different shops. It all comes out to the same cost. The last set of iron heads I had ported, the bill was $2200.00. I already owned the heads. The price included the rebuilding, all of the portwork, flowing the heads, and all of the valvetrain parts - valves, springs, locks, retainers, seals, etc.
yes,you can get a set of ported iron heads for less, but then we would not be comparing the same 2 apples.
The cheapest set of irons I did,was about $1300.00 because I did the porting myself,I do not have them flowed, and the valvetrain parts were not as expensive due to the cam.they were nice & all,and it was what the cutomer wanted, but a set of Edelbrocks, even out of the box, would smoke these.
The other issue comes with trying to find someone that will actually port iron heads, and also knows how to port the heads.I checked with Smitty,at M&J,and his price on a set of fully ported irons was $3,000.00.

Gotcha, but I would not be having them ported, because not only is this rediscussed expensive, but also decreases the street ability of the engine.

I would just be having the heads hot tanked, new seals, new springs, resurface the heads and a three angle valve job

don't know if this is what other people find but every set of heads i had done needed valve guides and most needed valves. i never needed to have any surfaced but the guy that done most of mine put one set on a belt sander.

Porting does not effect the streetability of the heads.Mine are fully ported, and I drive the car everywhere, even in parades.

A basic head rebuild, like what you described, will probably run about $900.00,that's what one of my other sets cost, that I ported myself.
Whoever you take the heads to,get a complete rundown of the work performed, and the cost of each, then the total. You can call & ask about a valvejob, and it might be $150.00 for the valvejob itself, but then there is all of the other work & parts needed just to do that valvejob. That's where it begins to add-up.
