91-92 Custom Cruiser/Roadmaster Trans Needed

Trans went on the 92 wagon, would be great if someone had a decent one for sale in the NJ area. Its a 700R4 also used in the Caprice.

You can always use this search engine to find a transmission in a salvage yard near you.

I'd search for 91-96 Chevy Caprices.

There used to be Brazilians of these around. Call a trans shop. They probably have a dusty one on the shelf.

Have yours overhauled by a reputable transmission shop. (Assuming that you don’t intend to sell it..)

'93 to '98 is the 4L60E, with four bolt tail housing. '98 to '03ish they moved to a different ribbed case, and six bolt tail housing.

Thats what I have read also, wondering what the interchange is between the sedan/wagon verses a camaro or firebird and a 2wd truck?

The main concern you have with the 4L60 is the tail shaft and housing. Any 87-93 4L60 (not e) will work. If you buy one with the wrong tail shaft/housing, you can swap them with the one you have. Measure the length, and make sure they are the same for a bolt in swap. The B body wagons and sedans are the same trans. Swapping a used trans into your car may be futile. Get a reputable builder to rebuild yours. You can even get "built" ones from a number of specialty builders to fix the inherent issues with the 4L60s. The 3-4 gear/shifting is where most of the issues occur. You can also get a better drum. If cheap is your criteria, getting an off the shelf build is probably the best option. You should only have to do it once, and it should give you good service for about 150K miles. If you are going to hammer it, get the upgraded ones from a specialty builder. The 4L60 is best suited to a car with less than 400 lb ft of torque. If you are making much more than that, you should consider a 4L80 (they only come in an e version), or the built 4L60. There may be the option of a manual valve body for the 4L80, and the 4L80 will require a different crossmember because they are longer than the 4L60. The engine to trans is a bolt up in either case. I believe the torque converter for the 4L80 is different from the 4L60. The 4L60 is basically a TH350 with an overdrive. and the 4L80 is basically a TH400 with overdrive.

Thanks for the info, a yard gave me a list of interchange but the Camaro and Firebird were not on the list for some reason? Cheap is what I am looking for, its a beater at this point, body and interior pretty ugly but I did swap the 5.7 a year ago so there is still life with that so I want to get a trans in there, I can wait I keep checking marketplace, there are lots around but all are pretty far away in other States.

Cheap can be really expensive in the long run.

If you are going to install it yourself, get a good low mileage unit (hard to find). You can get a good rebuilt one for about $1000 (here in Florida). If you are going to install it yourself, you will have to give your old one as a core. Installation is about the same cost as purchasing a rebuilt transmission. You can get a trans jack from Harbor Freight for a lot less than that, and you get to keep the trans jack. If you are doing the work yourself, get a tailshaft plug, or you will end up with at least 2 quarts of trans fluid on the floor. You may also have to move your VSS, and VSS gear to the new trans, so the speedometer works correctly, so make sure you have the correct type/tooth count of drive gear internally to operate the VSS. You may have to pull the tailshaft housing to access the drive gear if it is not the correct tooth count. The drive gear should be blue, and is 18 tooth. If you have a 2.73 axle gear you will have a white 36 tooth driven gear, and a 39 tooth or less VSS, and if you have a 3.23 axle gear, you will have a green 42 tooth driven gear and a 40 tooth or greater VSS. You do not need any specialty tools to change the gears. You will lose a lot of trans fluid if you need to make the change.

Make sure the tailshaft housing is not damaged at the VSS opening. The trans is usually too close to the crossmember, and the crossmember hits the bottom of the trans at that point, and distorts the opening. The only fix for that is to put silicone around the VSS and/or opening before inserting the VSS, or get another tailshaft housing that is not damaged. When installing the trans put another shim under the trans to give it a little more space.
