'70 Cutlass 37 Amp Alternator Core wanted
Looking for a externally regulated, 37 amp, stamped 1100879 alternator for rebuilding. Date code prior to February 1970 preferred.
Not worried about fan or pulley.....just need a decent case to put through my restoration process here.
Be able to provide good focused closeup pics, thorough description, phone number, etc.
Thanks

I'll look into my stash and see if I have that number.

W31 for one application.....a "plain jane" style w/out the HD stuff (If it was optioned with the HD stuff I believe that would have resulted in you getting a 1100777 {55A} - not 100% sure). I also assume any 350 Non-AC, etc. Cutlass would have come with the 879 but I looked around here at a good local place and not a single 879 to be found. As you know, like most alternators over the years, these things were turned in to recover the core charge on an exchange.
I found one from the excellent Olds nut - Paul (Hairy Olds).....picked it up at the Milwaukee Nats. It'll restore just fine and look great.
Truth be told I did find a 777 at the local place awhile back.....I was standing next to a Cutlass talking with my buddy (owns the yard) about the car....he had cut off and sold the back section of the car. I always look at alt's when out there and I had been looking for an 879 or 777.
I leaned over the rolled-up D side window and looked around on the car floor. "Hey, what the heck is that?"....an alternator peeking out under a torn up door panel or some other interior part on the front footwell.
Popped the door open and grabbed the alt...777 it was!!
Moral of the story I guess was leave no stone unturned. This thing was hiding in plain sight.

My understanding is pretty "basic" on this.....haven't done a serious interpretation of any factory manuals to try to figure it out with 100% accuracy.
We're talking 1970 models only here.
442 - NO!!! Your venturing into rarity land here with the 442's as those all got open face, internally regulated alts.....1100880 and 890 (37A and 55A)
W31 - I think if you got HD cooling OR rear defrost possibly OR HD charging system (was that an option?.....don't have a factory parts manual) you got the 777 (55A). So a 3.91 W31 automatically came with a 4 row rad (HD cooling) and I assume that meant a 777 alt ....as an example.
My W31 is a 3.42 with a 3 row radiator, no fan shroud and plainer-jane radiator top plate......no rear defrost either. I believe it would have had the 879(37A) alt. (had a parts store rebuild on it when I got the car....original long gone).
I believe there was also a "HD 3 row" radiator option....so not sure if that would have triggered any alt change.

While on this subject and I apologize for hijacking, how does one determine which is the correct alternator (number stamping) for a specific application and how is date code deciphered? Is there a chart somewhere? for example:
1970 442 w-30 4 spd no ac would get the same alternator as an ac car (55 amp? opposed to 37 amp?) due to the heavy duty cooling correct? if so what is the correct stamping for that and non ac version? 1100880 seems to be a popular application?

All 1970 Cutlass with the 350 non ac , including the W31 came with 1100879. My 391 4 core rad W31 has it as well.

Thanks Tom - Finding ANY non-AC Abodies down here at salvage places is rare.....much less a W31. I've run across only a handful of non-AC Cutlass's over the years at the old car places. Did get a few parts from a '70 442 4 spd (non-AC) years back....probably the only non-AC Olds in that yard and they had A BUNCH of Cutlass's, etc.
