Looking for nice original or NOS driver's side non remote mirror. I'm sick of the repro one not staying in place. They're just made like crap. The plate that rides on the ball is much thinner steel that the original and it just doesn't work
Holy finger lakes region, Batman! Wow, Seneca Falls, gateway to whatever. Right by the Thruway, too. I bought my first '69 Cutlass convertible in 1981. Just sold it last year. I immediately started to buy up every little part for that car in the junkyards there in Phoenix. When I moved to LA in 1987 I kept up the scrounging, soooooooooooooooooo, I have eleven of those outside rear view mirrors left. Four non remote, and seven cable controlled remote style. Most are very dreamy nice desert condition, and, of course, pit free. I feel your pain about the somewhat crappy quality of the Asian aftermarket stuff. The Pontiac big car mirror does the same thing. When you close the door or go over a bump in the road, the mirror droops. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Call me, Marty, at (818) 704-0145 here in LA. It's an answering machine, dude. Talk clearly and slowly and leave your phone number. DUH! If your car is a 4 speed you need to drive on over to Auto gear company in Syracuse and talk to the salesman, Nathan. Tell him Marty in LA sent you. They sell brand new American made Muncie 4 speeds. All new parts in a variety of ratios. You can also call my wife at (818) 251-0275. Hers is a cell phone with all that magic voodoo caller ID crapola. Geez! The repo convertible sun visor bracket for the '68-'72 "A" body car also sucks. It has metric threads, and the screw doesn't even look close to stock. It is pit free and brand new, though. I have TONS of stuff, Call me. '65 Starfire conv, '66 Dynamic 88 conv, '67 Supreme, '70 SX 455 conv. You get the idea. Lots of Buick and Pontiac stuff, too. Nice doggy, by the way. What's his name? Her? Gotta run OKBYE! Olds forever, baby. Love, Uncle Martybob. Boo-Yah!

Is repairing your original possible? I had the same issue w/ mine back in the '80s. I tried using a punch to create a high-spot or ridge on the ball from the outside in hopes to create more friction (epic failure). Eventually, something broke the glass and I discovered that one of the rivets holding that metal piece against the ball on the inside had popped out. So I threaded the remaining hole and put a screw in to apply pressure to the plate and keep it from flopping around. Then took it to an auto-glass shop and they cut an oval mirror to fit and installed it (glued it in). Its been better than new since then.

I might just do that with the reproduction one I still have. Long ago when the repro got loose I broke the glass trying to get it off. Then I found that the metal retainer plate that goes against the ball to keep it from rotating was very thin. I remember bending the plate to get it to seat better. Afterward I half-assed cut a piece of glass to fit (see pic above). It worked for a while but eventually it became loose again too. I assumed the NOS one would have been better but apparently it's not.
The repro on my passenger door, circa 2006ish, has been holding steady once I dropped some cyanoacrylate on top of the ball from the outside, then let it wick down around the ball. Just a dab will do it. Do it twice, allowing the first application to cure for a day or three.
I've had to re-glue it once since then, when I bumped into it.
Use the thinner formula. I'll text that P/N if you want it. It ain't cheap but it's cheaper than another mirror.
Mask the paint area off. The cyano will eat paint.
