1973-74 Cutlass rally gauges

Does anyone have a cluster with the oil, temp and fuel gauges in it?? Looking to replace my idiot light unit. My car is a '74, but a '73 cluster, although not the type used in '74, would match the style speedometer I have. I believe I can also use one from a '71-'72 model, if I change I use the '73-'77 housing, and use the internals, face, and circuit board off the older unit. I have seen some on ebay, but they are a bit steep for me, price wise.

This is a 1974 442 with the gauges. There were 2 styles of gauge faces used, and I don't think the other one ever had gauges in that style.

Does your speedo look like this?

Having trouble uploading. It registers to 120 MPH in numbers. I have seen the type that registers to 120, but is only numbered to 110, and has a white needle on it. Mine has the black needles with red tips. I cant see you pictures either. I have they other type as a spare part for the speedometer. I pulled it off a '74 Salon years ago.

This is the style that has the gauge set made for it.

I do have a speedometer off a '74 Salon, in that other style, I could switch to match the rally gauges.

OK, I found what you're looking for, but it's in a 73 H/O.

Yes. That is the one I was talking about. Very cool looking. I saw one not to long ago, but they stated it may not work, and they wanted $300 for it. It was likely worth it, but I couldn't bring myself to do it, with a question as to whether it worked or not. In retrospect, even if it didnt work, I could have repaired it with 1968-72 parts, but that would have doubled the price. Wish a company made one for these cars, in the original style. I dont like the digital ones.

I appreciate the offer. That one goes to a '75-'77 though. It has the "unleaded fuel only" on it. The '73-'74 just says fuel. I will keep it in mind. I may be able to find a '74 face for it

If I remember correctly, the wiring for 70-72 is different from 73-77.
I thought I had the correct pin wiring layout for 73-77, might have been on my Win7 PC and be gone.

Bumping this thread. Just installed a 1973 442 Rallye Pack gauge in a ‘73 Vista Cruiser. The wiring needs to be swapped around on the connector as the Rallye Pack gauge uses the same wires as the idiot light gauge, but in a different order. It’s shown in the chassis service manual. Very easy game of connect the dots (the Rallye gauge does not use the black ground wire on the harness for some reason). Also installed brand new AC Delco temp and oil pressure sending units.

I have mine installed and all wired in nicely. When I crank the car, my temp gauge needle shoots over and maxes out while I’m cranking. Is this normal behavior for these gauges?

I cannot remember which, I will need to check, but I believe it is a small green wire on the ignition switch you can disconnect to keep this from happening.

Do they do this from the factory? If they do, it’s fine and I’ll leave it alone. If it’s not being grounded properly or something, then I need to diagnose that.

I can’t seem to get the oil pressure needle to work. It is always maxed out when the car is running.

It has a new AC Delco oil pressure sending unit, and I have a new clean spade connector attached to it.

The wire has 9V running to the sending unit, and the sending unit has a good ground connection to the block. I have it screwed in tightly.

The sending unit shows 0 ohms. Bad sending unit?

if the sending unit has no resistance, it is likely bad. I would check it against another.

I’m pulling this one and returning it for a 442-style sending unit (the large one that requires the extension/adapter). Those are meant to be used with a gauge, whereas the one I purchased is supposed to be for idiot lights. I think that is my problem. Anybody know where I can get the oil pressure adapter/extension? I can’t find one anywhere online for some reason.

That is definitely the problem. I would check Inline tube for the adapter. I believe that is where i got mine.

If I remember right, there is a sending unit for gauges that read 80psi at max and a diff unit for 60 psi max. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 69-72 is diff from the 72-77, or is it the 78-88?

The idiot light sending unit was indeed the issue.

The correct part is the larger AC Delco D8034 sending unit. You will need a brass sending unit elbow usually sold as a 68-72 part, which bolts right up to my ‘73 350 with no issues. I didn’t use any thread tape, just made sure it was extremely snug. Zero leaks.

Hope this info helps someone else in the future.

In conclusion for using the 1973 442 gauge on a normal Cutlass: rewire your gauge cluster connector, use the larger sending unit and elbow. Probably a good idea to get a fresh temp sending unit as well.

Apparently you can disconnect wires directly from the connector by using a small flat head screwdriver, but I didn’t want to do that and risk breaking any plastic on the connector, so I just snipped the wires and re-did it with electrical twist caps. It’s a tight fit, but more than secure enough and totally reversible.
