1969 Ninety-Eight Rear Drums 2267

Looking for a pair of rear drums for my 98. Would appreciate any assistance in locating them.

My 66 98 drums are 2.5” wide I believe, larger than the 88 series, but you might enlarge your search from drums from 1965 to 1970 for 98’s as a start.

Is this car equipped with front disc brakes?
A look at the Oldsmobile parts book tells me that there were two different type rear drums used in 1968 and 1969 98 models.
Depending on whether or not it had disc brakes.
In addition, left and right drums are listed as separate part numbers. ( Don't ask me why??)

Drums on front. Rear drums are 11"x2.5".

The GM part numbers for those drums would be 398468 (RH) and 398469 (LH).
You may be able to find NOS parts with those numbers, or use them to cross reference them to aftermarket drums.

You might call Craig at Mobile parts at 516-485-193 Five.
He has a big stock of old aftermarket mechanical parts.

Using 88 drums on a 98? Here’s my understanding based on my ‘66’s:

1) 98 drums were wider than 88 drums with different shoes owing to the additional weight of the 98
2) 88 drums will bolt up and work on a 98, but you’ll have to change the shoes to match the narrower 88 drums
3) The 88 drums will have reduced brake swept area and will not stop as well as the 98 drums. If your 98 drums are 2.5” wide and the 88 drums are 2” wide, well your stopping power is reduced by at least 1/5 (20%), probably more.
4) If you have/add front disc brakes to the 98, the 88 drums can be used, but recognized that you’re reducing the factory system by a bunch and drive accordingly. Leave lots of room between you & the car in front of you.

Please check with a professional which I’m not. I’m just telling you what I’ve seen over the years. If Joe P chimes in, follow his advice.
