1966 67 442 air cleaner

I have a perfect original 1966- 67 442 Chrome snorkel air cleaner with the base that I would gladly trade for a 4 speed manual air cleaner assembly with the base Of equal quality. That means does not need re chroming or have any rust or defects. Sorry, not for sale. Trade only

Just clarifying incase a potential seller isn't aware of exactly what he has -- you're looking for the open-element unit, right?

The 4 speed is an open element air cleaner, it has a top piece, a visible air filter with metal mesh, and a bottom piece.

The snorkeled auto is a wider base, the air filter has no mesh, it sits on it. It has a top piece that also has a side (and the snorkel) and that top piece bottoms out on the bottom piece's outer lip. It is a closed air cleaner.

Koda, thanks for the clarification. Never paid much attention to the air intake assembly for the 64-67 4-speed cars, my 64', has the closed type, what was the requirement to go to the open style?

Sexiness.

An open air cleaner looks sportier. 67 was the last year for such stuff as 68 had the vacuum flapper unit that would route air over the exhaust manifold until warm. Such system was on an optional air cleaner for 67.

The open element top plate also has a small round metal piece that fits on top of the top plate where he wing nut screws onto..many are missing that component

To add to the conversation, for the purist restorer, underside of the chrome lid would have the use instructions.

I have two original lids for reference.

If your '64 is a 4-4-2, it would have come with a dual-snorkel painted (red) closed element air cleaner. Period. If it is a regular Cutlass it would have come with a single-snorkel painted closed element. The chrome open element air cleaners were only available in '66-7 and only on 4-speed cars. Automatics in those years came with a chrome single-snorkel closed element.

My first 67 442 that I bought in 1970 was an automatic but had an open element air cleaner. It had a top that had sides with a base that was smaller than the top. This allowed for it to be open all the way around but looked like a closed element one.
